DCS.exe icon gone?

Recommended Posts

Does the DCS.exe contains an icon?

Because after using using DisplayDriverUninstaller (latest version) and installing the latest nVidia drivers, i noticed i missed some icons (of which i'm not 100% certain they where there in the first place) in the DCS bin directory.

All of the icons missing are from .exe files, like DCS.exe, blocksimtest.exe, curl.exe, etc...

As you can see in the screenshot below, not all of the .exe files miss an icon.

Like DCS_updater.exe still has it. And therefore the shortcut on the desktop has one to.

Those that i presume are gone are black.

Same goes for other programs, Elite Dangerous has a few missing, Firefox also but my IL-2 install still has all of it's icons. So the questions is: do the files that miss an icon contain an embedded icon which can be used when creating a shortcut to it?

For example, when i make a shortcut from DCS.exe, the shortcut has no icon either and when i point to the .exe to use that icon i get a message that the DCS.exe contains no icon.

My desktop icons are all fine, they all point to an .exe which has an icon embedded.

Question is: do the .exe files which seem to have lost their icon really contain one?

I've been looking on the net for a solutions, came across quite some same stories (as always) but didn't find a solution just yet if there is any in the first place. Rebuilding the icon cache is no solution.

I'm also not sure if the DisplayDriverUninstaller (DDU) is the cause of it. Normally i don't use this, i just update a new driver (normally i stick with the one which works best for me) over the old one. This has never cause trouble. Not a real fan of DDU since it has caused me some throuble in the past. But i wanted a clean displaydriver install this time, to see the difference (if any) in VR.

Side note:

Must say that when i first used the DDU in this case, it didn't had the option to go into safe mode so i used it without going into safe mode. Reason for this is a USB PCI card and when this is installed, USB (mouse/keyboard) doesn't work when going into the BIOS or into the selection screen to select safe mode. Somehow this USB PCI card prevents other USB ports from working before Windows is loaded, even the onboard USB ports. Which means no mouse/keyboard in BIOS when the PCI card is installed. So to select safe mode, i needed to remove that PCI card first. But that's another problem...

Thanks but that doesn't answers my question: does the DCS.exe contains an embedded icon?

Besides, non of my installs have been moved and it's not only DCS but other programs as well who have no icon on "some" of their .exe files.

For what it's worth, on my 'puter DCS.exe does not contain the icon, while DCS_updater.exe does. No idea if that was always the case, though, because I think I've never launched the game with the DCS.exe directly. Been using DDU for year without issues (always in safe mode, however).

Edit: errrr... OK, what I mean is my DCS.exe has a generic "application" type icon, not a fancy "DCS" one, but I've just noticed that on your screenshots there's nothing. That's puzzling. No idea what's up with that (I suspect some driver eff'up).

I would at least have expected a generic application icon for those that have none imbedded. I also suspect a driver f..k_up but one i can't seem to restore at the moment.

In the mean time i went into safe mode (removed the PCI USB to be able to use mouse and keyboard outside Windows) and did the DDU and re-install if the drivers again, no joy. Restore to default file associations in the hope it would set the generic icon back... no joy either.

I'm interrested in how that generic icon for DCS.exe looks like.

There is a thing called ICON CACHE in all Windows versions and the one in 10 had severe issues a few versions prior to 1903, iirc it was with the 17xx versions, but maybe you suffer from one.

You could create a new System User and see if that new user gets a proper icon.

It may be worth to google the icon cache issues in 10, maybe you find a hint.

New users (wasn't something i tried yet) don't get the icons either. The're black also...:(

Rebuilding the icon cache is no solution.

Thanks for the heads-up Bit but i've been down that road already (and many others...LOL), no joy. Been Googlin' on and off al day...

Could you post a little screenshot of what those icons i miss exactly look like?

Not the ones in the FUI dir, these are fine, just the one from the DCS.exe, even if it's just a generic one.

OK, i seem to miss that generic icon with the blue rectangle on it (for the .exe files which don't have an embedded icon).

Now finding which Windows icon file misses the icon: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/where-find-most-windows-10s-native-icons

imageres.dll (both 32 and 64-bit) have last changed on 19/3/2019 so these can't be the problem.

However, shell32.dll (both 32 and 64-bit) have last changed on 11/11/2019 at which point i dragged in the 1903 Windows update and the .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 update.

Maybe something went wrong here although i've only seen the problem after using the DisplayDriverUninstaller 3 days ago.

So i'm still "guessing" the DDU caused it.

I can always try to install those.

I've searched the net and found some .dll downloads but all of them don't offer the latest version. I'll PM you for sending the files.

Lol true…

Windows icon cache can act up sometimes, I remember many issues on XP, 7 and some in 10, also together with start button and menu.

In 11 it seems more stable and reliable
