Hi all,

Did a bit of multi player futzing last night and had a situation. I am getting the basics of IFF on the hornets radar but my problem is this. On a server with no tags, how the heck do you you figure out who is the bad guy, once they are in visual range?? At least the servers I was on, all the airframes and liveries seem to be universally mixed on both sides. Even when I get a clear view, I have no idea what team they are on.

Example, yesterday I came over the mountains right below a plane, slid right in behind and when he finally saw me spent 10 min chasing his six. I didn’t want to fire on a friendly so after he said F it and rolled straight and level I pulled in on his wing. F18 check, US markings check. I finally said heck with it and backed of to rtb. Once we separated I acquired him on radar and dang if he wasn’t the bad guy.

Am I missing a piece of the IFF puzzle on the hornet close in? Are there servers without tags that have coalition markings Segregated airframes or colors for VID?

Keep in mind I'm about a week into this so learning, go easy.

Thanks

This is the core of Situational Awareness (SA)

It’s a skill you build over time with experience but in general you start to get an understanding (based on mission flow) of where planes are, where they came from and where they’re going.

Frankly it’s harder on MP servers where almost everyone is a Lone Wolf and can arrive over the battlespace from anywhere but in a more structured squadron environment where proper tactics are being employed, things will usually make more sense because you’ll have battle lines drawn that clarify where you, your wingman(men) and the bad guys are coming from.

If you find yourself losing SA, consider exiting the fight (if able) and extend back towards home base. Getting the action back out in front of you (instead of all around you) can often help you get your brain around the “big picture.”

Practice, practice, practice!

I don't know if the Hornet IFF is the same as the Viper, but in the Viper you press TMS left on the stick and it shows IFF on your MFD. Green is friend, red is enemy.

Just make sure you turn the IFF master switch to on during cold starts..... lol.

Well it is up to the mission designers to not have the same air frame on both teams or at least specify which liveries are being used on both teams
