Yes, unfortunately they are still viable.

In terms of capabilities vs the F18, F16 and F14 ?

Are they still viable in a multiplayer setting ?

They are very viable, and we are lucky to have them as an option for those not into going to ground school for 2 years and reading 600+ page manuals to be able to fly a virtual plane in a flight sim. Still complex enough to require a fair amount of study to master and in many ways underrrated.

I hope MAC will be a new place for those people :music_whistling:

Well if all that moved to MAC then DCS in my opinion would become a very boring monotonous place ,with 90% blue 4gen in MP ,except for the JF-17 and no other red/eastern competitive fighters in sight for years..(The M2000 being often pushed to red as a sorry stand-in, in regards to its real world Customer list)

Also aside from simplified system(which is not always to their advantage btw) they all feature PFMs now, so they‘re not easier to fly manually or anything..

True that and it's really unfortunate that there are pretty much no red air gen4 birds as full fidelity modules. Because of this the FC3 aircraft are a necessary evil so to speak. My above comment, which is admittedly a bit provoking, was more aimed at players with such a mindset as described by Thor_H and not as much against the aircraft. I guess MAC would be a more suitable place for them than DCS is.

To be fair the hornet and the viper are far more forgiving to fly once you know the basic air to air functionality, which are really not much more difficult to learn than FC3. You have about the same set of controls plus a table of MFD menus and dogfight modes to learn and that's it.

On the other hand you get advanced HMD which is absolutely disgusting in short range WVR threshold fights and L16 which makes large scale tactics a breeze. You can practically fly with your eyes closed in most of the environments and only use your radar when you're shooting at someone. The effort required to build and maintain SA is in the dumpster and the only pitfall is people exploiting the shortcomings of datalink SA - hiding in AWACS blindspots.

Your average pilot has infinitely higher chances of survival flying an FF bluefor module at this point. Obviously this is the point of the system. Honestly it feels even unrewarding since it skyrockets the skill floor in online play but I guess this is the next challenge to beat.

In an environment with AWACS flying an Eagle over a Viper makes you completely handicapped and while you can absolutely still wipe the floor with most people you find, it's almost no contest at this point. Sure the radar can be tough to manage and it's slightly slower but these things don't matter compared to all the benefits.

Once the P2P datalink is properly implemented it'll be far superior even without AWACS, right now you only share bugged targets and it's already disgusting for teamplay.

The bottom line is it isn't about how complex an airframe is or how many buttons you gotta push, it's all about what features it has and whether they can be exploited better than the others. Learning the core air to air functions is a matter of a few days.

Aircraft take time to master. Tactics take a lifetime.

Agreed for the most part. However apparently its what most people want, boring (personal view) fbw sensor - potent 4th gen blue fighters.

As ED for one reason or another (dont want to start that discussion again) is unable or unwilling to put out competitive eastern modules , if will likely stay that way for a long time, with mostly blue force turkey shoots.

But it has nothing to do with being good at it.

Personally would like to see more cold war era modules , where skills and tactics matter a bit more.
