So, I've got two questions for the community;

1) I think I am maxing the CPU and not even bothering the GPU. What graphic settings in the program are CPU or GPU related? What can I turn up without increasing the CPU load? ex, I expect distance and detail are CPU, water, heat shimmer are GPU ... ??

2) I understand that the program affinity doesn't help much with XP. I guess I'll believe you all, that XP doesn't give much bonus with this setting, but without it one of my cores is maxed out. Anyway, from what I read about Windows 7, it is going to run circles around Vista. I'd kiss a pig if it could give me a beta build of Win7 but it seems patience and luck are the only things that can really make that possible. So, anyone able to post a clean copy of the Win7 ISO? Anyone here using Win7 with DCS???

Trial and error is really the only reasonable response to point 1.

Point 2, from what I've read from semi-reliable responses is that the beta version of Windows 7 will be available to the public within weeks. However, if you know how to torrent then there are several beta versions floating around that are easy to find.

Wow! You guys are good. I'm planning on a new system soon and you've been helpful. If I spend much more money or time on sims, I might as well get my license back and buy a plane. Ah but then who would shoot my ars off?

New here. Lurking

The X38 is overpriced, the P35 offers much more bang for the buck. The X38 doesn`t give you a performance boost over the P35, comes with the same ICH9 southbridge, and offers new features that are quite useless ATM:

1. XMP memory is DDR3 only (= expensive) and requires memory modules that support this standard, which aren`t available yet.

2. Current gfx-cards donґt even use the bandwidth of PCIe 1.1, and the same will probably still be true for the GeForce9 series, so by the time when cards are available that benefit from the PCIe 2.0 bandwidth the X38 will be obsolete.

3. The Extreme Tuning Utility is nothing really new, every board manufacturer offers Windows based o/c tools these days.

4. 2x16 PCIe lanes are nice for Crossfire users but I guess that aren`t much.

5. Afaik only the absolute high end version of Intels upcoming Penryn CPU will have an FSB of 1600MHz, all others come with 1333MHz, so 800MHz memory sticks are still more than enough to utilize the complete FSB bandwidth (unless you want to o/c).

6. Also important is that the X38 consumes about twice the energy of the P35, so besides being expensive it also leads to higher running costs. The P35, especially on Gigabyte boards, is a very efficient chipset.

So instead of the X38 better get a P35 based board and save the 100$ to buy a better GFX-card or CPU.

Here is an interesting review of the X38 at Tom`s Hardware:

http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/09/26/intel_x38_chipset/

This turned out not to be true from a performance standpoint. The CoreI7 performs very nicely with BS and most of the core I7 reviews (Th, anandtech, sharkeyextreme)place the 920 application performance above the Core2 Extreme series processors in most scenerios. Now, in terms of the bang for the buck argument, I agree somewhat with the post above. My main issue here was that I didn't want to spend money on the last generation board and processor and the 920 ran 300 which is the same price as the fastes Q series dual dual core processor. I wanted to have a few years of upgradeability and swapping out motherboards is something I hate doing.

I see around 40FPS at a very busy FARP online. I average 50-60(60 is my refresh rate with vsync on) on Battle.miz in the game. I play at 1920X1080 on my new Viewsonic and I have noticed 0 performance decreases when increasing the res from 1680X1050. I have everything on high except water and vis.
