I know the tail roater is the noisiest part of any helicopter. Because the Ka50 has no tail roater, it it a lot quieter than most choppers?

sorry if this is a dumb question.

It is quieter in some ways, yes - this eliminates at least part of the rotor slap, IIRC.

Do you know how many Dbs sitting in the cockpit on a KA50?

I think yes:)

I watched a video from the targeting camera of a Apache in Iraq(I think) and they were watching a few guys in the dark, and they didn't seem to notice the helicopter...

Every chopper I've ever seen has been really noisy and could be heard several kilometers away...

I've seen many helicopters in flight in my life, also flew in few as a cargo :pilotfly:

And I was really surprised by the noise (lack off ;) ) three times, first with the AH-64, then with CH-53, and most recently with SH-2. Those things are really quiet compared to Mil family (2,8,14,17,24).

The tail rotor is quite noisy, but it's high frequency noise, therefore it ain't carried in air as far as the lower frequency - main rotor noise - the same with engines. Ever noticed on air shows that when the jet is close to you, actually only thing you can hear is the whining of the compressor - the high pitch noise, but when in air, you don't hear it - you hear other noises, lower pitched.

well, I know the Apache doesn't have tail roater blades positioned at 90 degrees to each other, which i believe is to reduce noise.

Well... the mil family i would imagine would be noisy. They look ugly, and they sound ugly :D

I spent 6 years at Army airbases and I can tell you that a lot of how you "hear" a chopper depends a lot on atmospheric conditions, to me it seemed humidity had the most to do with this. On some days you could hear an Apache coming from miles away, while on other days you wouldn't hear it until it flew right in front of you.

I myself was a Chinook man (no tail rotor) but they are very loud. A lot of it has to do with the set up of the a/c... Blade size, rpm, etc, etc.

I realized I haven't contributed much to this thread, but oh well :P

i think this thread is going to be like these other threads where people start telling that western helicopters/ planes are much much more better that russian.. Guys?? why?? it's so annoying to read this kind of threads

Because they are, I'm living under Mi-14s rotors whole my live, and you can hear them from 2km easily, a year ago I heard for the first time the SH-2.

A Hase pilot called me asking if I had my camera ready, because his friend who's flying Seasprites was visiting and he will flyby close to where we live, and he asked me to take some pictures. I said, ok, and put my camera on stand by. And since I wasn't hearing any chopper coming in, I get back to doing my stuff, but at one point I turned my head into the open window, and I see a chopper coming in no more than 700m and no sound!

With CH-53 it was a bit different story, I was walking back to my home, and behind my back I heard a chopper flying. The sound was a bit different then the Mi-14, and the volume was something like a Hase at 1km... yeah, but it was the German Stalion, in seconds those guys flew something like 80m above my head at full speed, and turned 90 degrees as sharp as a WW2 fighter would, and I was like:

:surprise:

American helicopters were designed for low observability way sooner than the Russians start thinking about it, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that their helicopters are less noisy.
