Guest daylite Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 After seeing the 6DOF video of the Black Shark cockpit on the TrackIR site and then after reading Doug "Uther" Lawrence's great article at Simhq.com on the 3DVisor Z800, and then reading that the Blacksharks cockpit was fully interactive, it got me to thinking (very excitedly) that from the screenshots and videos we've seen so far, it seems we are really not that far away from full immersive virtual reality simulation games. This of course (very excitedly again) inspired me to take a look at what is actually out there and available. So... to start off, I took at look at what I thought would be required: - Head mounted display - 6DOF HMD tracking - Realistic throttle/collective, stick and pedals - VR interactive device - gloves/pointer On the high end, you can really go to town (read: rob a bank or two), but here's what I came up with anyway (very cool): - Head mounted display - Cybermind Visette45 SXGA 3D - 1280x1024 - $ 12,875.00 - Pros - 1280x1024 resolution - 45deg Field of View - 0.1ms Response time - Cons - Price : $ 12,875.00 - 750 grams - 6DOF HMD tracking - VR-Space Wintracker - $2,250.00 - Pros - All axis 360x360x360 tracking - 15ms updates - 65fps - Cons - Price : $2,250.00 - Throttle/collective, stick and pedals - Custom KA-50 / AH-64d stick and collective - Hirevsims - Price on Request - HOTAS Helo Controllers - HOTAS Flight Helo Controllers - Cyclic Collective Head - or - - RealSims - Price on Request - Apache AH64D Pilot Collective - pdf - Apache AH64D Pilot/CoPilot Cyclic - pdf - Pros - Completely realistic flight controls - Cons - Will probably both cost an arm, leg, and probably a favorite family member. - VR interactive device - gloves/pointer - 5DT Data Glove 5 Ultra (left and right) - $2,350.00 - Pros - Easy to wear gloves - 75hz data rate - Optional wireless - Cons - Price : $ 1,175 (per hand) - $2,350.00 total - Total - Upwards of $20,000.00 *ouch* On the lower end of the scale, if you can call it that (still cool): - Head mounted display - 3DVisor Z800 800x600 - $1,499.00 - Pros - Cheaper - 40deg Field Of View - not bad - 225 grams - light - Cons - 800x600 resolution - instrument blurring - 6DOF HMD tracking - TrackIR-4Pro & TrackClipPro - $199.00 - Pros - Reasonable priced - Good update speed - 120fps - 8.3ms - Cons - 46degrees of movement (no looking behind) - Throttle/collective, stick and pedals - Flightlink - G-Stick III Plus - $835.00 US - Collective with throttle (C1) - $375.00 - Anti-Torque Pedals - $475.00 - Seat with Base - $385.00 US - Pros - Everything you need - Neat tidy - Cons - Not a combat collective - or - - MRVC003 Helicopter USB simulator system plus Jet Ranger collective - $2,400.00 - Pros - Everything you need - Complete solution - Cons - A little all over the place / untidy - Not a combat collective - VR interactive device - gloves/pointer - P5 glove - discontinued, but available'ish - $ 99.00 - Pros - Inexpensive - Cons - Funny plastic non-intuitive glove thing - Discontinued / scarce - No support - Total - +/-$3,900.00 - still heavy'ish, but feasible Well there you have it, now we just need DCS to support half the hardware and we're away! After all that - I've still got a couple of questions - Has anyone tried full immersion VR flying ? - Is it all we think it is ? - How do you guys think the 'Black Shark' 3D interactive cockpit will work ?
Sundowner.pl Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I have some experience with VR equipment in gaming.. not flying though, and there are many issues, like very narrow field of view (less then 50* horizontal), low resolution, sometimes the screens speed etc. Although I encourage ED to implement all needed stuff into the game, in case I win the lottery and will be able to buy myself the piSight :smilewink: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "If a place needs helicopters, it's probably not worth visiting." - Nick Lappos
Vekkinho Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 For that kind of money (in total) you can get completely new ka-50, so your flying won't be virtual... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

ED Team JimMack Posted November 15, 2007 ED Team Posted November 15, 2007 That's what I was thinking! We have tested military spec Virtual Reality Kits - $25,000 to $50,000 each. Obviousely not as good as 360 degree domes that cost $Xm. Marginally better than 3 screens with TrackIR! Having problems? leafer Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 If I had some serious cash Then I'd shop here. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
ED Team JimMack Posted November 15, 2007 ED Team Posted November 15, 2007 Does VR any damage on eyes? There is no research work on this to my knowledge, but it can cause major spacial disorientation after a certain amount of time. Do a google search to check research work. Having problems?
