Hi,

I am able to fire the HARM when the SAM emitter is behind (single player). Not sure that's a correct behaviour.

Easy to fix : rename the missile AGM-88X! :megalol:

What mode? In TOO mode this should be possible, as the RWR can handoff emitters to the HARM that are behind the aircraft, although I haven't tried that myself.

Edit: My mistake, I meant SP mode, not TOO mode.

SP mode.

Is the emitter supposed to be displayed on the HRAM DSPL for the HARM to be fired in TOO mode ?

Sorry, my mistake. I confused the acronyms... :music_whistling:

I meant SP mode and was talking about this mode, as this is the mode where the RWR designates the emitter that you want to target and the RWR has 360° coverage.

In TOO mode, yes. But in this mode you can only see and target emitters in front of the aircraft, unlike in SP mode.

So, is it normal to fire a HARM with the emitter behind ?

That seems extreme to me.

SP mode means Self-Protect, it's not meant to be used as an offensive kill-shot, but as a defensive 'stop-shooting-at-me' kind of shot. It's definitely not "normal" to fire a missile at something behind you, but it's entirely possible to do so.

It's not too uncommon to do so, especially when flying SEAD Escort, as it is important to react as fast as possible if a threat emitter comes online and threatens the strike package.

Btw, newer A-A missiles have this capability as well (e.g. AIM-9X, IRIS-T). It's called "over the shoulder launch", where another sensor (usally the RWR), designates the target behind the aircraft and provides targeting data to the missile.

It's a capability of the real system in SP mode. It's supposed to offer 360 degree defensive coverage. Obviously, a shot behind you isn't ideal, but the HARM has enough propellant to make the maneuver and fly at the threat with reasonable chance of success, if the threat is not very far. This will also come handy when Pullback mode gets implemented, since it allows you to immediately react to surprise launches and SAM traps.

Very, good, so "correct as is".

Thanks you very much.

That and the fact that the missile itself decides which target to attack in SP is why TOO is preferable IMO for normal attacks. People just need to remember to set up the missiles correctly for hostile only contacts to avoid attacking friendly SAM systems. Seen that more times than I care to recall on MP.
