panzerd18 Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 Finally returning to the sim after many years, mainly flew DCS World before Version 1, something is worrying me about the visual scaling of altitude/height. Having real world aviation flying experience, the visual scaling seems incorrect. Using the Yak-52 for instance, establishing a circuit altitude of 300m/1000ft, seems way to low visually. In fact, only when I climb to 1000m, does the aircraft feel like it is actually at 1000ft off the ground. In turn, when I am at 300m, it feels like I am at 300ft. Maybe I am crazy. I've double checked the altimeter and cross checked with F2 view to make sure altitude in sim is as reported on altimeter. Experienced both on Stable and Open Beta.
panzerd18 Posted April 4, 2020 Author Posted April 4, 2020 (edited) 375m in real Yak-52 375m in DCS 1000m in DCS On second thought this needs to be redone as zoom in DCS is further in. Edited April 4, 2020 by panzerd18
Art-J Posted April 4, 2020 Posted April 4, 2020 After adoption of speedtree tech on Caucasus map, some users started reporting the new trees are quite on the tall side for that geo region. I think that might be the biggest factor. That being said, for fair comparisons I would first check what FoV that particular GoPro has, edit snapview file to obtain the same FoV in DCS Yak and then compare. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.

After giving this much thought I think you are right. The trees are just too big, and it gives the appearance that you're physically closer to the ground. Also a large portion of buildings are large buildings instead of normal 3/4 bedroom houses, also contributing to the problem. Seeing tanks and trucks drive beside trees that are 2 to 3 times taller seems wrong. Of course giant trees like this exist but it is not the norm. Is there any easy way to mod the size of the trees to scale them down or is this impossible? Edited April 23, 2020 by panzerd18
