franx Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 Guys, I've been away from DCS for a year, and am now returning with an Oculus Rift. VR for the first time. I've tested it in free flight, and wow. But now some basic questions going forward. I'm assuming that my foot pedals are necessary for braking, yaw, etc, and that in-cabin throttle and stick eliminate the need for those pieces of hardware, but do most of you use Voice Attack or similar for guns, bombs, and the rest of the commands? aka MadMonk; Windows 10, 64 bit, Radeon 6800XT gpu, Ryzen 5 5600 cpu, 32 gig ram; Samsung 2TB EVO SSD, Thrustmaster Warthog throttle and stick, Saitek combat rudder pedals; Oculus Rift.
Svsmokey Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020 (edited) You may wish to check out these profiles for what you describe . https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=242416 I use VoiceAttack and Vaicom Pro , to talk to AI and eliminate all the communications menus . The thread is stickied at the top of the "Input and Output" section . You can also combine the two into 1 profile . Prolly need a Hotas for flight controls . If you still have your Warthog HOTAS, it will do about 95% of the things you really need in flying the A-10C. For the other aircraft, you'll probably have to tweak the default control settings, but your Warthog can carry most of the workload in any of the jets. franx Posted April 12, 2020 Author Posted April 12, 2020 Thanks fellas. So a real world throttle and stick are still needed. eaglecash867 Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020  Only way to go. Yup. That was the whole point of HOTAS, so you're not having to look down into the cockpit to find a switch. You don't need to see your hands to operate a HOTAS, and although I've never tried it, it seems like using VR controllers would be clunky at best. franx Posted April 12, 2020 Author Posted April 12, 2020 I’ve flown free flight with the Oculus controllers. It’s doable but awkward and very limited in what can be controlled. aka MadMonk; Windows 10, 64 bit, Radeon 6800XT gpu, Ryzen 5 5600 cpu, 32 gig ram; Samsung 2TB EVO SSD, Thrustmaster Warthog throttle and stick, Saitek combat rudder pedals; Oculus Rift.

Yep, ditch the VR controllers. Worthless for what you want to do In DCS. As others have said, get a good Stick, throttle (TM Warthog seems to be the norm) and rudder pedals and then you will control everything with the HOTAS button using muscle memory (it get easy fast with some practice). And then anything else you want to click in the cockpit, you can do various controllers such as a mouse (I use a trackball). I just downloaded Voice attack and LOVE it for doing all the communications commands for wingman, ATC, AWACs and the like. You can also have VA do voice activated switches as well (pretty much everything) but I made a conscious decision not to VA switches as that's not realistic. In a real jet you still have to reach down and do stuff with your hands. For me, the mouse trackball is easy. Eventually when the haptic gloves become mature, that will be the way to go. I've even added a couple of the Thrustmaster Cougar MFDs and I am loving being able to do that in VR as well. It was easier to find the buttons by memory than I expected.
