Those were still ground guided IIRC by the hawk radars? Seems like it was very weird attempt to increase the range of the system (air vs ground launch).

I was always under the assumption it was mostly guided by the desire of increasing the stocks of usable missiles, as getting new AIM-54s was a little tricky at best.

I scripted it to be efficient, so not much overhead in regards to calculations done on the client. Network wise it shouldn't have an impact, since all calculations are done on the client side as far as I understand the multiplayer approach in DCS. Anyway the main bottleneck will be a lot of ai or player units in a mission, not the IADS script.

Yeah, but the F14 radar couldn't actually guide those is what I read. They had to be guided from the ground.
