bilbosmeggins Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 Hi all. Not sure if the problem is unique to me, or whether it’s a “thing” in DCS. Right, I’ve attempted to do a few training missions in both the Huey, and the SU25T and haven’t got very far. The voiceover guy requests that I press certain keys to activate various actions, and then waits for those keys to be pressed. Trouble is, because I play in VR, I’ve mapped most things to my HOTAS, and the game doesn’t recognise that I’ve followed the instructions because I haven’t pressed those exact keys. So the game just waits, and cannot progress. Is there a way around this, so that I can continue training in vr, or do I have to give up on it? To play “flat”, even just for training, would be awkward because of my monitor placement. Plus, I don’t want to, lol.
Rudel_chw Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 .. The voiceover guy requests that I press certain keys to activate various actions, and then waits for those keys to be pressed. I've edited a few training missions, and I can assure you that the only key the mission designer can detect is the space bar. While I can tell the user: "Press 1 to change to Navigation Mode", I'm not able to detect the "1" key being pressed, instead I inspect the HUD to check if the NAV indicator is on (for example, I could also rely that the user did press the requested key). Trouble is, because I play in VR, I’ve mapped most things to my HOTAS, and the game doesn’t recognise that I’ve followed the instructions because I haven’t pressed those exact keys. So the game just waits, and cannot progress. Can you tell me the precise mission where this happened to you, to take a look at its innards? .. as I said, the only key you should need is the space bar ... that most likely you can blind press when on VR. Is there a way around this, so that I can continue training in vr, or do I have to give up on it? To play “flat”, even just for training, would be awkward because of my monitor placement. Plus, I don’t want to, lol. I prefer to do my training in 2D, even tough I have an Oculus Rift, because the cockpit highlights are too big on VR and obscure the switches that you are supposed to operate; but the keys have never been an issue for me. bilbosmeggins Posted May 26, 2020 Author Posted May 26, 2020 Hi Rudel. Thanks for your reply. I did try advancing things with the space bar, but got nowhere. I shall fire it back up shortly, retry, and then get back to you. Although I do remember, specifically, trying the Huey “Cold and Dark” training mission. The instructor said something like, “Shut the doors to continue”. So I used the vr controller to “grab” the door handle and pulled it shut. Then nothing. Pretty sure I would have pressed the Space Bar in order to Try and jolly things along, but you’ve got me doubting myself now, lol. I’ll have another look.

Hello, I checked this specific mission and you are absolutely right .. while it is true that a trigger can't detect an arbitrary keyboard key, there is a function that allows the trigger to detect if you have used a control binding .. and on this case, the training mission is looking for the command Right Control + C that is by default binded to open/close the door: If I use the Mouse to click on the door handle, the trigger does not recognize it because it is waiting for the binded key(s) ... same as it happens to you. Unfortunately, there is no good fix without altering the mission too much .. try this edited version, it just waits a bit for you to close the door and then goes on with the training .. I did a quick check of the remaining triggers and there seems to be no more of this kind. bilbosmeggins Posted May 26, 2020 Author Posted May 26, 2020 I must be going senile. Went back to the SU25t training, and it obeyed nicely, and I was able to continue. The Huey mission was a partial success. I chose the “Cold Start” mission, and the closing of the doors is, indeed, a sticking point. I closed the doors with the Touch controller, but then had to peep under my headset and press right ctrl+c to proceed. After that, the training went smoothly. So just a bit of a glitch there I think. So, case closed. I am definitely going mad. But, on the bright side, I can now continue with my training. Much appreciate your input :)

I didn’t expect you to go so much trouble. And I shall, indeed, try the file you have created. Not sure if any more things pop up later on, as I didn’t complete the full start up. Just enough stages to prove to myself that I was wrong, lol.
Rudel_chw Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 ... I didn’t expect you to go so much trouble. No trouble at all, as it was just a single trigger to edit .. after I posted, I edited it just a bit more and now the trigger waits for you to close the door by clicking on its handle ... no need to peek under the headset  For work: iMac mid-2010 of 27" - Core i7 870 - 6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz - ATI HD5670 - SSD 256 GB - HDD 2 TB - macOS High Sierra For Gaming: 34" Monitor - Ryzen 3600 - 32 GB DDR4 2400 - nVidia RTX2080 - SSD 1.25 TB - HDD 10 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Cougar Mobile: iPad Pro 12.9" of 256 GB
MAXsenna Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 Apart from Rudel's fix. Have you consider Voice Attack/VAICOM? Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk
bilbosmeggins Posted May 27, 2020 Author Posted May 27, 2020 Hi MAXsenna. I‘ve contemplated using VoiceAttack, yes. I already have it, as I use it with Elite Dangerous. The only reason I haven’t used it in DCS is in case I try multiplayer. Don’t want to be shouting out commands in the heat of battle, and confusing comms too much. But it is a great piece of software.

And you can still use VA profiles for cockpit controls with it. I'm not sure what voice comms you use for MP, but you can use PTT buttons, but of course you know that. Anyway, VAICOM has settings both for SRS and the native voice comms in DCS. You won't regret having a look at it! Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk

To be honest, I have little to no idea of what to expect in multiplayer, as I’ve never tried it before. Just trying to get to grips with a few planes before I try online. Don’t want to be going on now and ruining people’s sessions because I don’t know what I’m doing.

I'm not that into MP myself, but I discovered a pretty cool video about MP cooms and brevity from Ralfidude (I think) yesterday. Consider start using PTT buttons, if you're used to "open mic" in ED, and you should be all set! In case you're not aware, VAICOM is not Voice Attack, it's a separate plugin like the HSI (?) voice packs for VA. Only it is for radio comms "only", and don't use the F menu, but talks directly with DCS through Lua so you can have more commands and be more specific, and way more immersive. Cheers and happy multiplaying! Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk

Right now, it would just add another layer of complexity and confusion for me. I’m having a tough enough time with the planes, lol.
