I need to upgrade my old PC, and so I'm looking into speccing out a new build. However I've been out of the game for nearly 10 years so I'm not very well up to speed about what's been going on recently.

For example, I can tell for sure that buying a new GPU now is not a good idea because nVidia is expected to release a new series this year, so that can wait.

But what about the CPU market? I'm looking to make a high-end purchase that will last a long time. I am thinking of the i9-9900K. Is it a good time for the CPU market right now or is there any shakeup expected to happen soon?

Intel’s roadmap.

Whatever you buy now will last several years, just keep in mind that there’ll always be something newer and better down the road. For CPU upgrade just for gaming which typically doesn’t fully utilize all the cores, you won’t see much better fps buying now vs next year. GPU upgrade on the other hand could yield significant difference with each upgrade cycle.

PC: 5800X3D/4090, 11700K/3090, 9900K/2080Ti.

Joystick bases: TMW, VPC WarBRD, MT50CM2, VKB GFII, FSSB R3L

Joystick grips: TM (Warthog, F/A-18C), Realsimulator (F-16SGRH, F-18CGRH), VKB (Kosmosima LH, MCG, MCG Pro), VPC MongoosT50-CM2

Throttles: TMW, Winwing Super Taurus, Logitech Throttle Quadrant, Realsimulator Throttle (soon)

VR: HTC Vive/Pro, Oculus Rift/Quest 2, Valve Index, Varjo Aero, https://forum.dcs.world/topic/300065-varjo-aero-general-guide-for-new-owners/

10 years is quite a long wait for an upgrade, so I can understand you buying now. Probably 2 years time is the next time I will upgrade CPU - at the earliest.

If you buy this year I'd pay the increment for the 10700K if I were you over the 9900k, but not go too crazy on the motherboard... mid range only. Main reason would be IHS / better CPU heat transfer.

Not often, and fortunately the thought quickly passes.

I run on a Ryzen7 2700 and the other hardware you see in my signature and I would say it runs well, steady 40 FPS with medium settings. I decided on the Ryzen when I was playing other games like Call of Duty and Battlefield 5. If I would decide today with my renewed focus on DCS I would get an Intel because we can overclock them higher. I got the AMD because it was more affordable.

I have not tried to overclock my Ryzen although I can do it with my MB

AMD RYZEN 7 2700 / 32GB / RTX2070 / 500GB M.2 with Windows and DCS / 2 - 500GB SSD / Rift S/ TM Warthog with F18 stick and Virpil WarBRD / Foxx Mounts/ MFG Crosswind rudders + 3 MFD's | Now enjoying VR with PointCTRL controllers + Gamematrix JetSeat

You won't gain any substantial perfromance buying a 10900. Its all about clock speed. You can save a few bucks buying a 9900K and overclock. Air cooling has improved greatly if your not into water.

There were improvements in the 9900 that makes it a solid chip. I use mine for cad as well as some editing so it made sense for me. As a dedicated DCS machine, I did see improvement over my 4790K of course, but not as much as you might think. A SSD is far more important than the latest chip for load times. If you can get high Ghz RAM, it'll help with high load missions.

i9 9900K @ 5.1Ghz - ASUS Maximus Hero XI - 32GB 4266 DDR4 RAM - ASUS RTX 2080Ti - 1 TB NVME - NZXT Kraken 62 Watercooling System - Thrustmaster Warthog Hotas (Virpil Base) - MFG Crosswind Pedals - Pimax 5K+
