WelshZeCorgi Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 What is the net on the HUD for? What do all those notches, circles and lines mean? And why is the pipper fixed on the hud in Missile mode instead of following a target you locked on the radar?
fatboy Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 The DCS manual states it's for aiming at Agile maneuvering Airborne targets. Page 134 Of the DCS MIG 21 Manual Quote " Note: When engaging agile airborne targets which maneuver with more than 3-4g, you need to use the fixed net for targeting. This is because the pipper intercept angles could go beyond 7Deg, and the pipper can’t be drawn within the ASP reflection glass. corn322 Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 Don't forget this is not a Heads Up Display like "modern" aircraft. This is only a gyro sight like on WW2 aircraft. Here is layout of the fixed net sight:
Frederf Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 The pipper and missile seeker were never connected to the radar. Direction to radar target cannot affect these two things. The fixed net is useful as a backup sight and the primary method of shooting the gun at maneuvering targets (like fighters). Describing all the lines' meanings is a little exhaustive. Pages 61-66 of the manual linked here describe it in some detail. http://aviationarchives.blogspot.com/2017/04/mig-21-bis-pilots-flight-operating.html 1
