I just bought this module, I do like the airframe and low level stability it offers.

I am slowly learning it, and one thing I learned quick is everything requires waypoints and attack points for things to work. I thought for a while there has to be another way. I watch every tutorial and you always see someone placing waypoints and attack points at specific locations, great I think, but guess what, intelligence was wrong or the enemy moved by 100's of miles.

thats right, we thought the enemy ships or tanks were over here but we were wrong and they are over there.

What is a viggen pilot to do? The bombs I kind of guess I could calculate the ground altitude but what about the anti-ship missiles? what about rockets and guns? I test fired the RB15 by just aiming my plane towards some ships and I did hit a ship, but if I was off by just a little, say 10 degrees to the left of the ships the missiles would miss.

There just has to be a way to use these weapons without having waypoints

thanks

Hi,

You mostly don‘t need waypoints at all per se, they are there to help you navigating and finding pre-planned targets.

But lots of stuff can be employed off the cuff. Gun pods, ARAK rockets, RB04 antiship missile, RB75 (Maverick) and RB05 can all be used for attacking any targets of opportunity that you find anywhere on the map, without any affiliated waypoint .

Even bombs (low drag and high drag ) can be used anywhere, but for some things you need a valid QFE

(there are quite a few tutorials on how to get it on youtube).

The only weapons coming to mind that require waypoints are the RB15 advanced anti-ship missile and the BK90 dispenser.

Read the -weapon employment section- of the manual. It includes the steps needed to employ each weapon.

That said, the Viggens primary function is indeed one pass low altitude strikes on pre-planned targets , but that doesn’t that mean you can‘t loiter around or go elsewhere and attack whatever targets you find.

kind regards,

Snappy

Just curious, if the event has moved hundreds of miles, how are you going to navigate to his new location? Wouldn't you likely punch in a waypoint someone read to you on the radio?

"Subsonic is below Mach 1, supersonic is up to Mach 5. Above Mach 5 is hypersonic. And reentry from space, well, that's like Mach a lot."

For the RB-15, you use your radar. It is designed to find ship targets in the first place. You fly to your initial waypoint where the ships should be(if you have none just search on your own), after finding the ship/ships on your radar you just adjust the necessary Bx points on the radar screen to your liking for planing the attack and go for it. There is also a "quick fire and forget" mode for the RB-15 without the need to adjust Bx points, like you said you "aim" with the plane in the general direction. The missile seeker covers +/- 35° (70° total cone) in front of the missile and it will go for the very first ship it detects, enemy, allied, neutral it doesn't matter. Check the manual pages 329 to 341 for the RB-15. If you have further questions feel free to ask.

The only weapon delivery modes that require a waypoint are the nav and toss bomb modes, as well as the BK-90. For everything else a waypoint helps, but it's not necessary. Most weapon delivery methods (all except CCIP/quick release bomb modes IIRC) you don't necessarily need a QFE for the target either, as slant range is provided by radar ranging after designating the target (which happens automatically when you switch to weapon unsafe).
