The A-10C and the AV-8B TPOD FLIR image quality is way too good. Anyone who's used a FLIR camera can see that. The Hornet is much more realistic. And lets not forget that the image quality doesn't drop as you use digital zoom to zoom in, which it definitely should.

Interesting, so there is no optical zoom on the TPOD sensor?

That's what the FOV levels are for. I think the more modern pods have a continuous zoom thing, but the stuff in DCS should be discrete optical zoom levels with digital zoom as required. It's why ATFLIR is so exciting, its got 3 FOVs!

It was just that Harker seemed to suggest digital zoom only ILR, and that DCS was wrongly showing optical zoom.

What harker was talking about is the way that in DCS you can zoom in (radar elevation, digital zoom) without the quality reducing. Meaning we can resolve objects way outside what we should be able to.

That's what I'm saying. So, therefore the implication is that IRL the MAV sensor has no optical zoom, and that the image quality would suffer zooming in as only digital.  Unlike DCS which behaves as optical.

DCS Mav sensor, behaves as you would expect it would: 2 FOV levels (each fov being a distinct optical zoom level). The TPOD on the other hand, does not. It has the same Fov levels (optical zoom), but when you use the radar elevation to do a digital zoom, no image quality is lost.

Sorry, typo in my last post, as you can see from the others, I was meaning the TPOD FLIR camera.

The Maverick has two lenses that can swap in and out, toggling the FOV, and no digital zoom. IRL, switching Maverick FOV will actually cause a locked-on missile to drop the lock, as the image sensor looses sight of the target as the lenses are shifted. This isn't modeled in DCS right now.

The Lightening pod also has two lenses that can swap FOV. It's basically an optical zoom, though it's more like swapping the lenses on a camera than using a zoom lens. The zoom levels 0-9 are a digital zoom, and higher zoom levels should become progressively more pixelated. So WIDE Zoom 9 should look significantly worse than NAR Zoom 0, even if the area covered by the image is similar.

ATFLIR has three different lenses it can swap between, giving you a WIDE, MED, and NAR FOV. And I think no digital zoom at all? I haven't been able to find a solid source on that part.

What the others said. In our current pod, we have WIDE and NARO as optical zoom and the ZOOM 0-9 levels as digital. It's possible that digital zoom utilizes some sort of image processing to improve image quality, but it'd still look much, much worse than how it does in DCS.
