mac22 Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 Just trying to run the auto updater and I get the error message "Not enough disk space in the download folder - need 52,000mb when only 34,000Mb are available " Note have the DCS installed on my J drive and there are 72Gb free! - so just wonder whats going on? (also have 57Gb on my C drive in case its referencing that!) - so just wondering whats going on and why is it refusing to update? any help appreciated....
Flappie Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 Hi. I have no idea as to why size calculations differ but you may find interesting solutions here. Try emptying your Windows bin, by the way. You never know. Oh, and here's a light and handy tool to monitor your disk space (download link is down below). ---

Oh, and here's a light and handy tool to monitor your disk space (download link is down below). thanks for the reply 1)by downloads folder does it mean the download folder in the install(J) directory - have a folder called _downloads/torrent which contains about 8gb of data - can this be deleted? or is it referring to the general download folder on the (C) drive? 2)what do you mean but windows bin? (is it the recycling folder or the bin folder in the install directory?)
Flappie Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 1) "\DCS World\_downloads\" is the download folder the DCS updater is refering to. This folder stores all pending installation files. If you remove them, the DCS updater will re-download them. Once all installation files are downloaded, your game will get updated, and only then the _downloads folder will be automatically emptied. 2) I meant this Windows recycling folder icon, or whatever you call it. But emptying it would only help if your DCS \_downloads\ was stored on our C:\ drive. ---

So when I type in "dcs beta" in my win search bar it brings up the dcs app (which seems to have files located on my C drive! and when I run it its not clear which version of DCS its connected to and trying to load/update but suspect its the version of the low space disk which might explain my problem ). 4)How can I tell which version the app is trying to load and which is the most up to date version? (note one of the version has a run.exe the other doesn't!)
Flappie Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 (edited) 2) Yes, you can empty the "_downloads" folder whenever you want to. It will only make the downloading process longer, since the updater will have to re-download deleted files. 3) Wow, that's complicated. Are you aware you can store several custom graphics settings in one and only DCS instance? (yellow frame, below) 4) Locate each \DCS World\ folder (or \DCS World OpenBeta\ folder), go into "\bin\" and launch "DCS.exe". Once you reach the main menu, check the version number, in the bottom-right part of the screen. Here's the latest version available: Edited January 1, 2021 by Flappie ---
mac22 Posted January 1, 2021 Author Posted January 1, 2021 1)I think when I set this up (last year or before) you could not have different graphic option files - think I might consolidate it all into one install then - what is best way to delete the "dated" install on my J drive - think this might have just been "copied (cut and pasted)" from my main install so not sure how or if it appears on my window add/remove programs - maybe I can just delete the folder? 2)Yes I can see each install has a DCS.exe - but If i try to run each separately will it not try and force an update to latest version before it loads up? 3)If the DCS app is loading up (by default) the version on my L drive assume this suggests the L drive version is the original/main install? 4)Final question! if I have saved some profiles for controllers(I have a few) on the version I will delete - where can I find them and can I just copy them across to my main DCS install?
Flappie Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 (edited) 1) Yes, you can simply delete the main folder in your J:\ drive. 2) No, it's OK: DCS.exe doesn't update anything. It's a job for DCS_updater.exe (which launches DCS.exe at the end of the update process). 3) Yes, that's highly probable. 4) Your controls and settings are stored in your "Saved Games\DCS..." folders. The tricky part is to identify which one. The dcs.log files should help you: look into each "Saved Games\DCS...\Logs" folder, you will find a "dcs.log" (or simply "dcs") file. Once you open it, you will see the path of the executable at line 2. Then look for the word "saved" and you should find the "Saved Games\DCS..." folder that's linked to it. Example below: I open "Saved Games\DCS\Logs\dcs.log" on my PC. Line 2 indicates: 2020-12-30 11:59:33.908 INFO DCS: Command line: "D:\DCS World\bin/DCS.exe" Then I look for the word "saved": 2020-12-30 12:00:39.893 INFO DX11BACKEND: DX11ShaderBinaries::loadCache C:\Users\Flav\Saved Games\DCS\fxo And this is how I know my "D:\DCS World\" installation is linked to my "Saved Games\DCS" folder. Tell me when it's all clear and I'll tell you how to copy your configuration from one "Saved Games\DCS..." folder to the other. Edited January 1, 2021 by Flappie ---

But... there was already a "mod" to give you control over multiple installs and multiple graphic options for each separate install: Check this: You can create a preset for each graphic setup you want, just select it and launch the game from within the application. Quick and easy. (and that's only one thing of the many option you have with this utility. It's highly recommend!!! ) Win11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 5800X3D, Corsair H115i, Gigabyte X570S UD, EVGA 3080Ti XC3 Ultra 12GB, 64 GB DDR4 G.Skill 3600.
