Hi Guys,

I currently have a normal 24" 1080p monitor, however i sometimes struggle to spot air & ground targets especially at distance. At present it is causing issues trying to fly carrier recoveries although i think practise is more likely the answer with this one.

The rig I have is fairly potent, not the most powerful but ok for what i use it for EG Head tracking not VR with a 1660ti GBU & 32GB DDR4. This will be being upgraded soon so i am not too bothered about not having a 3090 at present as i will do at some point.

So what would your single display option be? Size & Spec?

What other display options would you go for EG 2 or 3 displays instead of a single??

Thanks

Chilly

Practice is what you really need. Know where to look at and use zoom. All "pro's" use zoom a lot.

If you go for a larger monitor with the same resolution, things might get a bit better because your individual pixels will be bigger.

If you go for same size monitor but with a higher resolution, pixels will be smaller.

If you go for a larger monitor with a higher resolution, make a quick calculation on how big the screen need to be to end up with the same pixelsize.

I went from a 1920x1200 24" to a 2560x1440 27" and although the resolution is higher and the overall picture is much clearer, spotting things on the 24" was a bit easier.

I regret a bit the 27", should have gone for at least a 32" at 2560x1440 (but deskspace didn't like that).

I bit the bullet (and ate the cash) for a 32" 1440p screen a while back. Now I wish I'd gotten a 40" 4K one. But, then I'd want a 60-80" 8K one and a GPU that can drive it at acceptable framerates. Then I'd want...

You always want a bigger screen with higher resolution, and then you always want higher framerates. You know how it goes 🙂

Before I switched to VR I used (and still do) a 1080p 32 inch IPS display. It's actually pretty great, the contrasts and the large pixel size ensured that I could spot contacts in the mess that is "visual IDing in DCS world."

A 1440p would work too. Whatever you buy, make sure it's the highest contrast screen you can afford. It makes all the difference in Visuals and spotting. (Refresh rate is not as important as you are not playing a FPS)

Spotting both air and ground units is a lot easier now with my HP Reverb G2 than it was with my old Oculus Rift CV1. At the moment, I still have an older 27" 1440p TN screen which I use for mission making/editing (and non-DCS gaming), but I have a larger 38" IPS panel on backorder since early January, which I am quite excited about: the LG 38GN950-B.
