DCS: Speech

Are there any plans to include more "voice" into DCS at some point?

I mean orders, confirmations, reports and such over the comms. The DCS world would become much more immersive if there were more comms traffic, e.g. switching to the radio channel of another flight and you could actually hear what they were doing, another flight contacts you and asks for help, ground forces asks for assistance and so on. Obvioulsy the tower guiding you on the ground would be very nice indeed, wishing you good luck when your taking off and welcoming you back when you return.

There's something to be said for a friendly voice when you have a difficult mission to accomplish. Hmm, I might be getting a little over dramatic here

Granted, adding advanced voice comms to the sim may be a lot of work and it would not really affect the simulation as such, on the other hand it would add a lot (a huge lot) to the sim as a whole, after all, radio comms is something that real pilots have to deal with. Perhaps some of the workload for something like this could be put on the community, I'm sure if ED came out with a sort of script for recordings there would be a lot of voice actors that would take up the challenge, obviously there would be technical demands on the recordings and perhaps on the acting ability ;)

I do believe that a great deal of hours or work could be out-sourced to the community.

So, ED, there's a lot of talent and will to help just waiting for you guys to say the word. Don't hesitate to ask.

< Most definitely. Would love to hear more radio chatter. Was just waiting for a reply from ed so that we'd have something more than just speculation to discuss.
Same here... but alas, not even a tester cared to comment

What about in-game voice-comms, between real people I mean, is there any definate word on this? With a sim (at least at first) that will be great for coop games and one that also models radio quite realistically you'd think that something like this would be on the to-do list anyway.

Even today I didn't notice game radio chatter like it was in MiG-29 Fulcrum from NovaLogic. We all know it was really poor arcade, but radio chatter, dialogs were and are awesome. Beat LO, Falcon, whatever else flight games. IMO this is good example how it can looks like.

I meant not exactly comm via player - tower - but example few comments after finish mission like "good job, headquater is pleased". Or between allied forces (helicopters). One AI says to another that he spotted enemy, so HQ asks what type, AI answer ect. Similar to real :)

This solution made that player felt like in real cooperative mission. Not alone, not so silent :)

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

I suppose we can safely assume that it's like 90% of the other things on ED's wishlist:

"Not until the new engine", if at all. Since we have not heard anything about plans for it earlier than this, my guess is that they have not considered it yet and that depending on how easy/fast it would be to implement they might give it a go. Depends on how much they think they NEED a new comms system. However, since most simmers have a rather strong opinion regarding the realism of voice comms, they might decide it's important. Lock On doesn't even have control of taxiway from the tower via comms. As it stands now you just taxi wherever you want.

On a side note: For inflight comms - I would say that more "random" chatter might not be realistic anyways. From an army perspective, most vehicles (and helicopters) have several radio frequencies preloaded into their vehicle before embarking on a mission. While operation remains normal, you stay on the lowest tier of your comms (just between you and the other vehicles in your team). If something hits the fan and you need to request backup/airstrikes/medivac/ect ect then you go to a specific channel for that. THEN you MIGHT hear other teams/units radioing for the same stuff. But normally you only hear your own flight/tasking/convoy, just as in lock on. It would be neat, but they would also have to simulate other units operating in your area as well (ie: a dynamic campaign system).....ACTUALLY rethinking it....Since you are flying attack helicopters, if the mission designer made you an escort for a convoy, it would be nice if the convoy "commander" contacted you via commas when they got hit and told you which direction/which building they were being attacked from...And rethinking it AGAIN...I think that this sort of situation is already possible with the new mission editor via triggers and custom voice samples. So I suppose it's already possible...It's just not automatic...

And on another note: New and more active traffic control for airbases would be nice. Would be cool if each airport had a different voice (male1=krymsk/male2=anapa/female1=krasnodar) too.

I find myself missing this a lot, it just might be me, but often I don't know in which direction I should take off how I should taxi to get to the right starting point, it always feels like I'm all alone after mission start.

Agree, random chatter isn't the best way to go, what I would like is that AI flights actually communicate within (and sometimes outside, depending on what happens) their flight with standard "chatter" about what they're doing and such. And if you wanted to you could switch to their channel and listen in.

You wouldn't need a dynamic campaign just for the voices.. perhaps the mission creater could just add a CAP flight or something like that or maybe only the voices somehow, (like file -> add voice comms -> a2g mission type 2b.)

Different voices shouldn't be too difficult if ED gives my idea a try. Or they could just add random filters over the recorded voices to let the voices be a little different from time to time.

I know that this is not really what you guys want to hear, but sometimes when I am board I will have liveatc.net streaming while I am playing lockon. It really adds.
Good tip, but it's quite sad that we have to resort to something like that

From memory all this is in FACs & ED announcements.

The standard radio chatter has been expanded & improved (well in my opinion), but does not include AI to AI chat.

There are event triggers which allow sound files to be called.

There are randomising triggers.

So, beyond the expanded & improved stock radio calls, by putting these last two things together a mission maker can create randomised voice messages triggered by specific events - including - should the maker wish - instructions on how to get to the runway & reprimands for not following those instructions :-)

Cheers.

Cool - thanks for the info.

Now, what about the ingame-coms between players? An integrated system would greatly enhance multiplayer teamplay and multiplayer immersion in general. Using independent programs like Teamspeak is an option, but if you check out the servers, it's usually the regular crowds joining Teamspeak, while the majority of users don't even know or fear complications with installing and configuring this software.

But communications really help a lot, especially if something like Teamspeak-Overlay was included, too, so you can see who's talking.

"This (a squads name here), we haved encountered a heavy tank colum north-west to our position. Requisting CAS..."

Example?

Something like that yeah, there could be missions where you fly CAS and just cirle around waiting for the call. Battles could be random so they'll be fought in different places and with different units if you play more than once.
