bflagg Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Good day all, I know this has been described by others, but has the problem been identified? F15 (only thing I fly). After about 20min of "zooming around" I go for landing. as I approach the landing strip, I get a bad "surging" effect. I would get this occasionally in the past, but since I've reinstalled my windows two days ago, it's become really bad. (been doing this stuff since the late 80's) BUT if I fly around for same time or greater, the surging effect doesn't occur at all (until I come near ground.......) CPU / Mthboard temp within limits. (130 and 112 F) I've tried everything from 2x - 6x AA and 2x - 16x AF. P4 2.8 ATI AIW PRO (128 megs) 1 Gig pc3200 My full specs are here.. http://www.theflaggs.com/lockon/machine.htm If anyone has any suggestions, I'm willing to listen. Thanks and happy new year!!! Thanks, Brett
GGTharos Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Is Heat blur off? ... heat blur likes to cause problems. Could be something else too though ... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
bflagg Posted January 4, 2005 Author Posted January 4, 2005 Is Heat blur off? ... heat blur likes to cause problems. Could be something else too though ... Hi GGTharos.. Been a while... happy new year... yeah it's off, I forgot to mention. Thanks, Brett
GGTharos Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Happy new year to you too :D Hm, could be some other graphical -or- sound problem ... I suggest checking AA, AF, then scene settings (go to medium) view distance (go to medium), check water on medium or less, textures should be ok on high but you can give it a shot and try'em at low. Also play around with the haze - try to identify where the problem's coming from. Also, make sure force feedback is turned off, it likes to eat FPS. bflagg Posted January 4, 2005 Author Posted January 4, 2005 Thanks. Most I've done already. But the ForceFeedback....I'll check the cfg file when I get home.... thanks Thanks, Brett
Kula66 Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Sorry to be dim, but what is 'surging' ... I also 'fly' the 15 and haven't noticed anything that could be described as surging. Regards James

Regards James It's kinda of like a row boat effect..... Pull back up to 8k or so and it goes away. Go back down...then it's row row row your boat...... Thanks, Brett
169th_Cobra Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 i had this as well but it only happened when i put the res up to 1280 and had AA and AF on. as soon as i changed either the res or AA/AF it stopped. i think i was just trying for a little too much on my rig (fairly similar to yours) so i came back to realistic settings and all is fine. hope you can work it out. for Kula: it is where your fps bounce up and down causing the view to surge along as if you were in a row-boat. (mine was bouncing between a comfortable 28 then down to a grinding 7 and then back up again)
bflagg Posted January 5, 2005 Author Posted January 5, 2005 I got it figured out... I was at 1280 x1024 with 6xAA and 16xAF. The problem was NOT the resolution..... My heat sink on my CPU is the stock P4 one. The heat sink (due to my stupidity), had no thermal paste left. It burned off..... So I went down to my local PC overprice parts store and purchased a big ass (and noisey) Heat sink and fan kit by cool master. The temp never went above 40c as to before 48-50c..... The game played smoothly at 20-25fps under this graphic setting afterwards. I moved it down to 1024x768 for the heck of it and my FPS stayed the same (3 fps difference)... I've just moved my AA to 4x and my AF to 4x. will report back in a few.... REPORTING BACK.... NO change.... 20 - 25 fps.... I'm going back to 1280x1024.... BTW can anyone recommend a good water cooling solution that won't break the bank? (CPU / ChipSet /Video Card setup...) Thanks, Brett
169th_Moose Posted January 5, 2005 Posted January 5, 2005 quote TW can anyone recommend a good water cooling solution that won't break the bank? (CPU / ChipSet /Video Card setup...) endquote I know http://www.thermaltake.com/psu.htm makes good ones. Also you can check these baby's out, still air cooling but less expensive then going water cooling solution. Starlight Posted January 6, 2005 Posted January 6, 2005 Hi, what do you mean for "surge effect"? if you mean slowdown, I think the problem is heat blur or something like that. Solution (I must admit it's a great advice from Caretaker): pause the game, press ALT+TAB, go back to desktop and then switch back to Lomac. Then it should run fine.

Heat blur was off (I think it's useless unless your movie making). Alt-tab out of lockon to windows and back increase your speed because AA is now disable by doing so.. This has been dicussed with feedback by the Dev's and others way smarter than me. Thanks, Brett
