GGTharos Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Today (September 10th) the Large Hadron Collider was powered up, two years late. At a cost of approximately 5 billion pounds (10 billion dollars), this experiment is intended to confirm the existence of the Higgs Boson, also known as the 'God Particle'. According to one of the Quantum Physics predictions, it is interaction with this particle or its associated field that gives other particles mass. This experiment could therefore confirm the Standart Model and answer the question 'what is mass?' Boberro Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Hope it won't be Half-Life failure experiment and headcrabs Earth invasion lol :D Now seriously, it is fantastic, I am very impressed about this structure, so long tunnel, complicated counts, various High-Tech accelerators, whoa really big high-end engineering... 2 Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ

ED Team Groove Posted September 10, 2008 ED Team Posted September 10, 2008 Nice Boberro ! Today they successfully made some full turns with the pencil-like shaped proton ray. Mid October will be the first serious experiment afaik. PS: Friend of mine is working on the ATLAS Device. Our Forum Rules: http://forums.eagle.ru/rules.php#en
Case Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Exciting and interesting times ahead, that's for sure! It would be great if they actually found the Higgs boson. :smartass: There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
Pilotasso Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Interesting, the watter surface started to slope on my cup and slide on top of my desk... hmmmm .
Cosmonaut Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Mid October will be the first serious experiment afaik. I heard the same thing, a few weeks before any results will be released. Should make for some interesting documentaries once things get underway and we see what happened a fraction of a second after the big space boom, boom. :P Cozmo. Boberro Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 (edited) Hahah black hole is up :D People, run away ;] Here is a webcam showing a part of the LHC http://www.cyriak.co.uk/lhc/lhc-webcams.html Edited September 12, 2008 by Boberro Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. ED Team Groove Posted September 12, 2008 ED Team Posted September 12, 2008 There are some very interesting things about the LHC. Like the 30 Gigabyte /s data output which has to be analyzed on the fly before being transfered to the storage for an later analysis. Our Forum Rules: http://forums.eagle.ru/rules.php#en
Case Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Like the 30 Gigabyte /s data output which has to be analyzed on the fly before being transfered to the storage for an later analysis. It is no coincidence that things like the internet originated from CERN. Another science experiment is LOFAR, which is going to collect astrophysical radio signals from the sky from many small receivers. This data also has to be analyzed and processed in realtime. The amount of data transfer and processing power needed is just staggering. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LOFAR The design of this telescope relies on the forming of beam, similar to what is done in modern radars.
