mibsk Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Probably I know the answer ... (no ... still in development ... etc. ;-) ) But anyway: Is there some techdemo of the next gen of DCS engine ... or some screens ? Just to see what world level of detail (weather/terrain) can be expected ... some waving grass when you land, better particles (smoke, fire), whatever ... ;-))) { I like those on FSX: http://www.realenvironmentxtreme.com/ http://fullterrain.com/ } Cheers, Miroslav
Rhino4 Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Nah, dude it should be at least 9 months (if not more) after initial release of black shark before we start to see the new engine. They're working on it now, but no tech demo so far....Waving grass when you land...That may be a bit extreme and I doubt we'll see it but I would weep with joy if I saw that much detail going into the new DCS engine!
mibsk Posted September 15, 2008 Author Posted September 15, 2008 Thanks for reply, ... just started to think/imagine/dream how it might be ... after I saw above links and the briliant job that guys did on the FSX game engine (which certainly has limitations ... ) ... No, I'm not intending to compare DCS to anything ... just dreaming a bit after seeing where the TECHNOLOGY goes ... whichever game engine it is ... ... videos on IL2 - Birds of prey, Flashpoint 2, Armed Assault 2, etc. are flashing through my mind ... Moore's law gives some 'exponential' wheels here ... One day those imaginations will sharpen ... patiently waiting ... as everybody else from us - future users of DCS ... no doubt there ... ;-))) Cheers, Miroslav
Cola Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 What new engine? I don't follow.. Are the next DCS modules like the A-10 and AH-64 ment for the new engine? Sorry, new guy. :) "Well, ya know, she's not pretty like an A129, but more like an AH-64, you get an instant hard-on when you see her."
sobek Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 (edited) What new engine? I don't follow.. Are the next DCS modules like the A-10 and AH-64 ment for the new engine? ED are working on a new engine that will, in time, replace the current modified lock-on engine. There has been no further statement as to when the new engine will be ready, as it may be far too early in the development cycle to predict that. However, IIRC, the new engine will most likely not be ready when the next two modules are released. Edit: I'm not sure if you got it correct, so i'l try to explain: The whole game will be ported to the new engine, regardless of the modules one has installed on his system. So even if the modules are now released with the "old" engine, once the new one's ready, the old modules can be played with the new engine as well as the following ones. from the FAQ: The base DCS simulation environment will be continually upgraded and improved with release of new modules. However, as each new DCS base version is released, all DCS users can upgrade to the same base version to ensure compatibility. The only difference between players would be the selection of what aircraft would be player-controllable versus AI-controlled according to which modules were purchased. Cola Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Ah, thank you for explaining Sobek. The whole concept sounds so... nice. Not like the gaming industry at all. Pretty dang cool. Weta43 Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 As you've probably taken from the post above, the modular aircraft / common engine upgrade concept should avoid fragmentation of the multiplayer community, and maintain continuity in the community in general. Cheers.

I hadn't realized this...very cool to see a new engine coming along. Thanks for the info
