Anything over 70% GPU usage will cause frame lag/stutter in VR. Motion smoothing.

Hello chaps

Ive noticed that whenever you go passed 70% GPU usage in DCS you will get frames lagging and rubberbanding when you look off to the sides or rotating the plane. Its not really stutter but i suppose you can call it that too.  I really wonder why this is and how it can be fixed since it leaves a large amount of perfomance out.  This was also the case on different computers.

I have this is my Pimax but i believe i saw it on my reverb G2 when i had this too.

I suppose its a limitation of the DCS engine but are the developers aware of it and working on a fix?

no this is not a problem for me, not even when i had a 1080ti

On what HMD?

I had it on my i770k 1080TI With Pimax. 3090 5900X with Reverb g2 and Pimax.

G2

its more likely to be something else overstressing you, do you know if its happening because of CPU or GPU? frametime ?

Aight. I may remember wrong on the G2 as its a while ago and i didnt have it that long but as far as Pimax goes frametimes dont matter. As soon as it goes over 70% with no frame time spikes or anything close to being over the limit (sitting at 60-65fps without motion smooth on, 45 on) on the cpu side it will start to lag but oddly mainly when looking sideways. Im on 3600hz 32gb and the cpu frametimes can be at 7ms. They have no effect.  Seeing as its across two systems and only in DCS im tempted to think its a DCS issue.

dcs is remarkably "touchy" to environmental conditions on your pc, more so under VR.  Odd stuff can cause some large effects on cpu and gpu ft...

If frametimes dont matter its a first for me, but life is full of those,  when you say looking sideways do you mean at low level and looking at trees...  you might try turning shadows off and MSAA if its on

I have this exact same issue: stuttering with motion smoothing @ 45 fps and relatively smooth 50-60 fps without.  It is most pronounced, as you say, when looking off the right or left wingtip while simultaneously performing a brisk aileron roll.  Slow rolls and other gentle maneuvers don't seem to cause much of an issue.  It happens down low as well as at altitude. All in all, it is pretty much unplayable with motion smoothing turned on.

My specs are similar:  i7-9700k @ 5.1Ghz, 32Gb RAM, 1080ti, Pimax 8k+

I agree that this is most likely a DCS issue as, I have no problems with *another WWII sim* with similar graphics settings and motion smoothing on.

Settings really does not matter. Anything over 70-72% GPU use will cause the issue.  So i always have to aim to keep below 70% if i want a smooth experience.  I see Don wan here has the exact same thing.

@speed-of-heat Sure frame times matter but im sure you got my meaning. I cant see anything on there that would make this effect.

I have to run with Motion Smoothing off as well.  With it on I get all sorts of spikes in frame time and fps jumps all around from 40 to 60, and stuttering.  With it off I get a steady 60 fps (40 fps down low over buildings on the Channel).
