groogiam Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 I am experiencing an issue where I will get random black flickering and sometimes entire sections of the screen turning black. This happens randomly and typically followed by a crash a few seconds later. This behavior seems to be even more pronounced after restarting a mission. My system has an Ryzen 5600x with PBO enabled and 32GB ram overclocked to 3600mhz and an rtx 2070. Disabling all overclocking on my ram and cpu does not seem to help the issue. Crash logs are attached. Please help this has made the game completely un playable. dcs.log-20210616-174619.zip

groogiam Posted June 16, 2021 Author Posted June 16, 2021 (edited) The issue I am facing has much faster black flashes. I do occasionally get the effect that is in the video but more often than not it is several black flickers which last less than a second each followed by an eventual crash. I have attached a video of the issue. DCS Black Flicker.mp4 Edited June 16, 2021 by groogiam
silverdevil Posted June 20, 2021 Posted June 20, 2021 make sure all the Windows updates are up to date? also DDU to reinstall all graphics drivers? many moons ago i had a 1070 card that would not run DCS for more than a few minutes and would display weird graphics anomallies then crash. only happened in DCS. other titles were fine. i fought with it for months and finally got a 1080. when i installed that card all the drivers were replaced. i saw part (a DLL) of the package being replaced was many years old. that part got replaced and never had any problems after that. i gave the card to someone and they had no issues. good luck AKA_SilverDevil Join AKA Wardogs Email Address My YouTube “The MIGS came up, the MIGS were aggressive, we tangled, they lost.” - Robin Olds - An American fighter pilot. groogiam Posted June 20, 2021 Author Posted June 20, 2021 My graphics driver was recently updated. I have cleaned/repaired dcs and reinstalled. Neither resolved the issue. My install is pretty fresh so do you still recommend clearing the shaders folder? I did find something that does seem to help. Downclocking my vram down 200mhz using MSI After Burner seems to stop the flickering and stops most of the crashes. I do not experience crashes in any other games using stock VRAM speed so this seems like this is something specific to how DCS deals with VRAM.
silverdevil Posted June 20, 2021 Posted June 20, 2021 @groogiam - it will not hurt to remove the shaders. it does take a bit longer to recompile but many folks have had success. overclocking sometimes can be a culprit for issues. another thing i have seen a faulty DIMM can cause problems when OCd. also i did see in your dxdiag log that you have a minimal swap file (probably windows is managing it. perhaps making it static at 16384 (16 GB). that is known to help too. you can always go back to windows managed. TheCoyoteHunter Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Did you get this problem solved? I was just watching your video, and I was getting the black flashes followed by a crash just like you. Here is what fixed it for me, you have completely different hardware, but maybe it'll help. Solution groogiam Posted June 29, 2021 Author Solution Posted June 29, 2021 (edited) After some more testing it appears this is due to degradation of my VRAM. I have now started to see some artifacting in other games which is also resolved by decreasing the VRAM clock 200 MHZ. Edited June 29, 2021 by groogiam
