JaBoG32_Prinzartus Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Indeed, when "real terrain" option is enabled Tacview display the terrain from real life (the one from Nasa Shuttle Radar Topography Missions). Since FC/BS are not as accurate, you will then notice an offset and resolution difference. Notice that units positions remain the same. Fly the SU-25 (non T) quick mission, record Tacview-file and view in Tacview. When "real terrain" is activated, the tanks are positioned in the water... At least that's what I noticed. Vyrtuoz Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 Yes, because in FC/BS, the ground is not at the same position as in real life ;) Fly the SU-25 (non T) quick mission, record Tacview-file and view in Tacview. When "real terrain" is activated, the tanks are positioned in the water... At least that's what I noticed.
104th_Crunch Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Sorry if you have explained this before Vuytuoz but, is it not possible to match the exact terrain that is in Lock On? I mean in terms of exact elevation of terrain. As you know Tacview can show planes moving through mountains etc. Thanks for your hard work!
wed Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 My tacview logs are really huge in size. 15 min flight on multiplayer server is about 90-100mb. Is it norm?
Vyrtuoz Posted October 22, 2008 Author Posted October 22, 2008 Huge flight recordings With DCS: Yes. (because there a lot more details recorded than in FC) With FC: Not really. (except if you have an heavy loaded battlefield) I any cases, if you can share me your flight recordings (for example on http://www.filefactory.com/ or on your own ftp), I will have a look at them. Then I will do appropriate optimizations in my exporter to reduce the size as required without loosing too much quality. Also, remember that you can style do a "Save/Save As" in Tacview to compress any text flight recording into a compressed binary file which will be much smaller. Does this answer to your question? Vyrtuoz Posted October 22, 2008 Author Posted October 22, 2008 "Accurate" Lock-On terrain vs Real Life Terrain Crunch, haven’t you tried Tacview 0.93 or read the release notes? By default Tacview now displays the terrain from Flaming Cliffs/Black Shark. It is indeed pretty “accurate” since units going through mountains are now a pretty rare case. Let’s have a look at the following screenshots: On the left you can see the terrain from real life (like in previous version of Tacview or like when you ENABLE “Real Terrain” in the options menu) On the right you can see Lock-On terrain which is now displayed by default. You can notice that Lock-On terrain is indeed offseted (like Prinzartus did noticed). Those pictures speak by themselves :music_whistling: (Note that FC terrain is more accurate than the Lock-On one. And BS terrain is even more accurate than the FC one, but it is still less accurate than STRM3 (real life) terrain which can be seen in Tacview when "Real terrain" is ENABLED) Sorry if you have explained this before Vyrtuoz but, is it not possible to match the exact terrain that is in Lock On? Stalintc Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Not to sound stupid, but what is Tacview? Its basically a tool that captures the goings on during a mission that you fly, then when the mission is over you can use Tacview to run over the events in the missions, what happened, where and why! So it is essence a sort of self training tool so that you can spot mistakes and try to improve next time! Like the ACMI recordings that are taken during RL training exercises.

104th_Crunch Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 Crunch, haven’t you tried Tacview 0.93 or read the release notes? Of course, I always do read the release notes and have not seen the 'flying into mountain' occurrence yet with 0.93  I just wanted to fully understand and now I do thanks to your reply. .93 is a great update! Thanks again for the most helpful Mod in Lock On there is.

JaBoG32_Prinzartus Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Where can I find the DCS-BS installtion procedure and *.lua script. I am only aware of the manual installation procedure for LOMAC-FC but not DCS-BS. Vyrtuoz Posted December 4, 2008 Author Posted December 4, 2008 Export script Hi Prinzartus, The export script for DCS-BS will be released when DSC will be officially released worldwide. However I suggest you to try the automatic installation which should run fine in 99% of cases since Tacview 0.92. Please, let me know if it does not work for you. th3flyboy Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 is there any chance of a improvement in the terrain for use with dcs in tacview, right now i'm trying to get some ideas for static objects done, and I'm running in to the issue of the terrain mesh being off in tacview, i put in the height of the building in the xml file and it shows below the terrain in tacview. 1 Current Sims: DCS Black Shark, Falcon 4.0, X-Plane 9, Steel Beasts Pro PE, IL-2 1946, ArmA 2, FSX, Rise of Flight, EECH, Harpoon 3 ANW, CSP
sobek Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 +1 Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
Vyrtuoz Posted March 17, 2009 Author Posted March 17, 2009 Buildings in Tacview Indeed: static objects are centered on the coordinates you give to Tacview. So, in your case, you have to declare the center of the buildings. (*not* the basement coordinates) Which is = ground_altitude + ( building_height / 2 ) I agree that this is not very intuitive. But I wrote that code two years ago ;) I plan to improve that by adding new types of static objects with more intuitive declarations. Also, the actual rendering of static objects is not optimized at all. So I may improve it in upcoming release if you think it is necessary. Do not hesitate to share me your work when available, those data will help me to improve static objects support. is there any chance of a improvement in the terrain for use with dcs in tacview, right now i'm trying to get some ideas for static objects done, and I'm running in to the issue of the terrain mesh being off in tacview, i put in the height of the building in the xml file and it shows below the terrain in tacview.

Admittedly this will take a long time, and I'm starting with small areas first, but this should allow people to see things such as target buildings and the like, not to mention enemy positions in relation to buildings... ED Team JimMack Posted April 9, 2009 ED Team Posted April 9, 2009 For our new members that are using Black Shark, I can highly recommend Tacview as an essential aid for After Action Review, to discover what happened in your mission. OK I just tested the stuff you told me to test, I'm attaching an XML file and a replay file, open those up in tacview and look at where all the buildings are, then look at the building positions in the editor. building 1 is that building in the north of that town that is all by itself. *edit New info, apparently the DCS editor doesn't give accurate coordinates in the editor window, the in game coordinates and the in editor ones are off. Wilde Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Is there any trick about using tacview for multiplayer sessions? It works fine for me in solo play, but it never records anything when I'm playing via hyberlobby. What am I doing wrong? edit: *damn* Forgot to mention I was talking about LOFC actually. Found this thread by forum search, so sorry if this is the wrong forum. :/
