The best you'll get is probably the R-60M when it comes out (and the IR system is reworked), but don't expect anything fancy.

The only other thing is illumination rockets.

In general the Mi-24P was a day only helicopter.

Someone should make a non-combat mission, where you have to transport the helicopter near dusk from one base to another. Maybe on Cyprus, and the objective is to get to the other base just as the sun starts setting. Would be a nice showcase for the helicopter and the beautiful light\weather effects.

The Hind was indeed used at night in Afghanistan after the Mujahideen intensified their night activities because of the Hind's harassment during daylight. Illumination rockets were in fact the route the Soviets took.

VFR night should be no problem for the current version in DCS.

They apparently had NVG's as early as Afghanistan too. I gather the latest hinds had to be modified to make the instruments easier to read, but seemingly that didnt stop them using them earlier.

What we could really do with is a flare bomber routine, to make this kind of thing easier. Have an Antonov in a continual loop, making fair drops in a single location. It would be very useful.

It's not just about the instrument lighting. Firing the cannon in pitch black darkness would completely blind you in the P version.

Im not sure its a problem for the pilot. Ive read there was a large mount of flash when the gun did not have such long barrels. But right up there at the front, the only person I could see might have an issue is the gunner, and I dont think that is going to be a big problem if he is looking through the optics.

you don't have the optic doors open when firing the gun.

partly the doors are there to protect the sight from the gun concussion.

Hungarian hind 24p night firing.

looks like they have fitted new LED lights to the rotor tips.
