skywalker22 Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 I would like to know if aircraft(s) in DCS use any files for saving variables, parameters, which we change, so they stay in the aircraft even after engine shut down or mission restart? Or do we (will) always have to start all over again each time. Specifically for F-16, params which are entered into DED. I am not sure how this is handeled on RL airplane, does it also put into memory, and stay there even when airplane is turned off. I didn`t mess us a lot with DED on F-16, but as far as I remember, I did try ones to use MISC/HARM param (as part of learning curve), and it reset back to default state after restarting mission.

Yes, this function you talk about exist in the real aircraft. It's called DTC (Data Transfer Cartridge), it stores stuff like mission radio frequency, flight plan, pilot's preferred setup of the MFD pages... In RL, once DTC is inserted into the jet, the pilot just have to load the data during start up and everything will be all set. In DCS however, this function has not been implemented yet, but it will be in the future, since it's a realistic function the real jet has. I would say yes, even more important then params in MFDs, which do not held many static params in my opinion, they are mostly meant to use as "live-able-to-adjust-interface", and setting params on the fly for which ever reason (mission, weapon, radar, flight,...).

Yes, for example, CMS program setup.
Frederf Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 F-18, F-16, A-10, AV-8, Mirage and probably several more have these systems. In early days F-16's DTE was magnetic tape but modern is solid state storage. It's not exactly saved between shutdown and start but more can be loaded from or downloaded to the cartridge. For example if you turn on the airplane, load data, change setting, turn airplane off, turn airplane on your changes will be erased. However loading your preferences again would return those preferences to the airplane. Some things are loaded back onto the DTC for review, maintenance MFLs are the only one I know about. The list of items that the DTC handles is extensive.
