Nealius Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 Has anyone else experienced an increase in sharpness in their Oculus headsets in the past week? I have not changed any settings, but the image quality is much sharper than it used to be. Too sharp, in fact. So sharp that it causes some....artifacting? The best way I can describe it is to imagine taking Photoshop and applying the sharpen filter at maximum settings. I replicated an exaggerated example with a screenshot. In the headset the sharpened distortion is more subtle, but still quite noticeable, particularly when looking at distant buildings or even the nose of the Spitfire.
ppokit Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 Yep have to agree the sharpness is just a little too high. To compensate I’ve changed the MSAA settings at the driver level (AMD 6800XT), or have just disabled it in ODT, but overall an improvement I think.

It turns out a sharpen setting was added in either v33 or v34. If you go to the Oculus Debug tool you'll find it. I set mine to disabled. Haven't tested yet, but it should remove the overdone sharpness.
Enduro14 Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 Mine was originally overdone, but then set the q2 to its native res in the oculus software 5408x2736 for me and looks much better. Like anything VR its in the EYES of the beholder Intel 8700k @5ghz, 32gb ram, 1080ti, Rift S
dburne Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 Yeah most reports I have seen have been praising the increased sharpness. Nealius Posted October 16, 2021 Author Posted October 16, 2021 I run mine at 1.2x resolution, so that may have made the sharpness look terrible for me. My image was sharp enough at 1.2x resolution, DCS PD 1.0, and Oculus Sharpness off.

Nealius Posted October 22, 2021 Author Posted October 22, 2021 Default resolution of 1.0x, sharpening on. Image quality decreased a tiny bit, but the sharpening is not overdone like it is at 1.2x resolution. There's also more shimmering of distant objects at default resolution. Less shimmer with 1.2x.
