Wolf1964 Posted July 21, 2022 Posted July 21, 2022 (edited) Hi Folks, I'm a newbie to DCS. The main thing I like doing is flying different sims. If Steam or ED cease for any reason, will I still be able to fly the sims as stand alones as we did on PC flight simulations in the 80s? If so, which is the best option to buy - Steam or Standalone? No, DCS needs access to ED servers to validate your account credentials. Without that validation you won’t be able to use the Sim. If ED gives a warning of its termination, you could enter in what’s called "off-line" mode and use DCS without access to the servers, but you would have no multiplayer capability and be tied to your current hardware, as soon as your hardware changed the Sim would stop working. 24 minutes ago, Wolf1964 said: If so, which is the best option to buy - Steam or Standalone? in this aspect, they are both the same. Both need Internet to download, activate and start playing but: Standalone version keeps your activation for 3 days after the last connection. There is also an offline mode - you have to turn it on while still online and from then you can play offline indefinitely.* You can't make any changes to the PC (not even BIOS update) while being in offline mode! If you get locked in offline mode or anything happens to the PC, only the ED support can help you. Steam _probably_ has these options too, idk. *Details are here: Edited July 21, 2022 by draconus Win10 i7-10700KF 32GB RTX4070S Quest 3 T16000M VPC CDT-VMAX TFRP FC3 F-14A/B F-15E CA SC NTTR PG Syria
