MattM1121 Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 (edited) Greetings, My first Falcon experience was on an Atari ST c.1988/89. It was awesome and I've been a fan ever since. I've recently migrated to VR for all my flight sim needs (MSFS202, X-Plane) I wasn't aware DCS had an F-16 VR pit until a few days ago. So I downloaded the Steam version and gave it a go. I'm a serious newbie when it comes to DCS. I think the DCS F-16 is a real treat and just love it. I've dusted off my Thrustmaster TQS with the TUSBA R2 and Warthog stick. Added the Buttkicker Gamer 2 and it's really something. I think the developers are doing an excellent job and I'd like to say "Thanks for the hard work.". This reminds me of the Falcon 4 days and the SP deployments. I remember how exciting it was when SP3(4? 5?) came out and had the multi-colored MFD symbiology. Good times for sure. I'm really looking forward to being a part of the upgrades as this fine aircraft continues development. Thanks, -Matt Edited November 17, 2021 by MattM1121 6
AlexCaboose Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 Welcome to DCS! I’d recommend downloading the Standalone version. Earlier access to future sales, and you get 10% of purchase price back towards future purchases in the form of “miles.” 2 476th vFG Website, 476th vFG Discord, 476th vFG Pipeline
darkman222 Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 (edited) Yes, welcome to DCS. I started with Strike Commander ( as my avatar shows ; ) , then got my hands on Falcon 3.0, which was way too complex for a teenager. Then went to Falcon 4.0 which was a lot more accessible in usability. Then I forgot about it. Realized that Falcon BMS was out, went back to flight sims and the F16. Again forgot about it because it was already an old sim. When I heard about DCS, was when the F18 came out. I knew systems were comparable to the F16, and VR available, I started right away with the F18. I learnt a lot of, in deed, comparable systems and technical approaches. When the F16 came out I immidiately went back to it. Systems and flight model are still under development. I am dogfighting a lot in it and wait until it is finished. But sometimes I just fly around in it like cruising in a car. And this is amazing as well. I enjoy the unrestricted view in VR and the good feeling that I know that systems and aircraft from so many sims for such a long time now. Next challenge for me: Private pilot license. No kidding. I am taking the first lessons on the ground already EDIT: If youre new to DCS try the aerobatic servers. Friendly places to "just" fly around with real people. Much more fun than in MSFS2020... or if you wanna get shot down immidiately try a "just dogfight" server Edited November 18, 2021 by darkman222
Lace Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 Welcome. I am of a similar vintage, having started late '80s, and growing up with Falcon 3.0 and MFS, returning after a long hiatus with the DCS A-10 and being completely humbled by the experience. The level of detail was mind-blowing and required a serious investment of time. A few years later the Viper came along and that was it. The time was found, the books studied and the parts collected for the 'pit. The experience (in VR) of actually sitting in the a/c was more than I could have dreamed back in those Falcon 3.0 days, even with my modest hardware. People moan about the DCS Viper, but while admittedly it is unfinished, and likely to remain so for some time, it is still a great module and the one I spend the most time flying. Take your time, learn the capabilities of the a/c, RTFM, and most importantly enjoy it. @darkman222 Good luck with the PPL. It takes time, and is rarely a smooth journey (especially in the UK - not sure about Germany), but is very much worth the effort! The sim flying helps in some ways, especially with the checks, scans and RNAV. Not so much with the stick waggling. See if there is an XP11 module for your training aircraft and sit there in VR learning where all the switches etc are. It will save you time (and money) in the real aircraft. 1 Laptop Pilot. Alienware X17, i9 11980HK 5.0GHz, 16GB RTX 3080, 64GB DDR4 3200MHz, 2x2TB NVMe SSD. 2x TM Warthog, Hornet grip, Virpil CM2 & TPR pedals, Virpil collective, Cougar throttle, Viper ICP & MFDs, pit WIP (XBox360 when traveling). Quest 3S. Wishlist: Tornado, Jaguar, Buccaneer, F-117 and F-111.
