Hello All,

I'm a 54 year noob trying to get started in flight simulations.  I would like to meet and/ or join a like minded squadron that has and older community with a great sense of humor.  I'm not into milsim realism at the moment because I don't have enough knowledge and experience to add value to that particular type of community, not saying I don't have interest, just extremely green.  Having zero flying and military experience I'm concerned with finding the correct squadron.

I can set up simple missions, do some start ups, take offs, very basic navigation, and landings (pretty rough).  Currently purchased F-16, L-39,SA342 Gazelle, Nevada and the Persian Gulf.  Also downloaded MP-339, A4 Skyhawk and the T-45.

My goals are to learn more than the basics of flying but also participate with others in missions and campaigns yet not to be ineffective or a burden in it.

As a fulltime employed person and having a family I can't dedicate my life to gaming but it is important to me.

Joe

Here you'll find both answers and discouragement. Don't read the latter 🙂

Just get into squads, try out and ask around. The more you're in MP and other players the more familiar you'll feel there. Don't think any second about your added "value" or being a burden. You'll get better in no time. Everybody understand that there are rookies.

I’m looking for the same as Joe. I’m in the central time zone but since I’m retired I’m available most of the time.

When I was born, Eisenhower was still President of the US. I am retired as well. If any old and crusty folks (senile is ok) would like to fly a with a couple of other people, message me and I will send you a discord link.  This is not a advertisement for a squadron (They aren't my cup of joe). Just for a few people that might want to get together and fly missions who are similar in age/interests.  Strictly casual, in the US, Central time.

Same here....54 yr old noob really trying to get better at the Hornet (I was a Hornet avionics tech in the 80s-90s).  In fact I transitioned VMFA-251 from the F-4s to the F/A-18As in the mid-80s, and then VMFA(AW)-533 from the A-6s to the F/A-18Ds in the early 90s.  I have a buddy who flys with me.  He was an Airframer/Maint Controller with me in 533.  So there could be 2 of us...

I'm East Coast (Pittsburgh) and he is Central (panhandle of Florida).

My primary is the Hornet, but I also have the P47, P51, FW190 Dora, and the Bf 109K-4.  All of which I haven't flown a single minute in.  I really want to get the Hornet down before going to another.

I got you by a year, but I am pretty much in the same situation. New to DCS, and I have been in training for the last few weeks. Ready to try the multiplayer but don't know where to begin without getting my butt kicked. Let me know, if you find a good squadron.

Well it looks like we are all looking for the same situation.

Right now I'm at 90% on the Hornet and looking to get the other 10%. The only way to do it is to get online and share knowledge with others. I've spent the last 20 years flying MP in Janes F18 and BMS.
I've been on several servers in DCS and it seems a bit arcade-ish to say the least(might just be me because I'm old school).
I'm currently helping BKrull get his system up and running so we can get up and flying.

Here is my invite:

I will build the missions. For training or sorties
I believe in "mission light" meaning we have three things ,Assets ,Support and Targets. Not a lot of crazy stuff going on that make a mission file large.
Provide a server for DCS and SRS
Help anyone that needs to get started in the Hornet.

Same thing as" MK-82 Not a squad invite or a commitment just looking for a few of us older guys to fly and learn with. always casual.

PM me if you like.

I'm in the same situation - Midwest here looking to find some guys who want to fly together do some missions as well as build up to maybe harder missions etc....It is hard to jump into servers with guys who fly daily milsims - and I do like realism, but life and time gets to be the issue.  52 years old and looking for a group who will fly and start doing missions we either build or acquire where we can work together and build skills.

Thanks,

Todd

Damn, I feel old compared to you guys....... 64 here, retired twice, USN in 1997, and Boeing June 2021. You would think I have all the time in the world to fly DCS/IL2. The spousal unit and youngest Great Granddaughter keep me busy. I was a USN Avionics tech AT, Intermediate Maintenance on DECM systems. Did seven WESTPAC's on three different Carriers, three on the Connie (79 - 82), two on the Enterprise with VA-94 (85 - 89), and two on the Lincoln (93 - 97). Sometimes I actually think I miss it.......... sometimes.... I've got all the Warbirds, F-86, Mig-15, M-2000, F/A-18, F-16, A-10C, FC3. I'm working on learning the Hornet right now. I like to blow stuff up more than shooting stuff down.

I flew the 1st version of the mod. I have been looking at the recent release of 2.0.  Great mod.  Although, I would prefer an M model, since that was what I worked on ... 🙂

Hoss,

Which Boeing site?  I started at McDonnell-Douglas in STL (ILS on Super Hornet and Harpoon SLAM, Retrofit Engineering on Hornet / SuperHornet), then off to Wichita (C40 / 767 Tanker), Philly (FCS), Oklahoma City (Ran Saudi MX AWACS, F15) and Finally Long Beach (C17 GSP).  Left in 2010 and been with GE since.  Former Navy Airframer (NAS Whidbey / USS Kitty Hawk AIMD / SEAOPDET).  CMEL / CSEL / ASES but don't really fly IRL anymore

Same situation as the others, 55 and trying to get slightly better than the average QF4 drone.  Partial to the Hornet but have most of the modules and theaters, though as soon as the flyable A6 drops I will be all over it.

Hope to find a group I can fly with that can help with training.

Still working on my pit which seems to change every month......

Another Eisenhower baby boomer here, hence the '52 in the name.  It's WEIRD being the same age as old people.  (I actually have that on a shirt)

My 2 cents on finding a squadron to join would be to find the servers that are flying the planes you want to fly, on the map you want to be on, where there are good #'s of people on at the time of day you are available to play, that speak your language, and fly on that, listen on coms, speak to them on coms, and meet people.  Generally the more the merrier, and everyone was a rookie at one time.

This is a very helpful and friendly environment with addicts who really want to get others addicted so we have them to enjoy it with.
