AnzacPT Posted January 30, 2005 Posted January 30, 2005 i think someone has misunderstood me... i TRULY HOPE that Fighter Ops sees the light of day... i just stated in another thread that alternatives to LOMAC, as OF NOW, are none. if progress is being made on Fighter Ops, i am TRULY happy for it... a new sim is ALWAYS good for the continuance of our hobby and keeping our niche market alive... of course... i am expecting a good product in return... :) i thought i should point another thing... when i stated in another thread that work in Fighter Ops was stopped, it was due to the legal imbroglio caused by GTi dropping the project... they had (i think) quite a headache figuring out how to continue their project... and the fact that they DID, shows that at least they are commited to the project... in the end, they had to resort to an existing engine... in this case... X-Plane... there was plenty of talks of being able to retain the original engine, using F4 engine, making a new engine... but in the end... this might end up being a highly modded X-Plane... the claim that Fighter Ops is going to model the entire planet is not reasonable because that was done in the X-Plane engine... they are just using that... building in an existing engine might NOT be a bad thing, if done properly... i will wait and see what comes out...
DarkStar Posted January 30, 2005 Posted January 30, 2005 Hi. I don't think there ever was any talk about using the F4 engine as a code base for Fighter Ops. I think they did a smart choice when they made a special agreement with Austin... but then again, the only thing left from X-plane is the terrain, wich is highly tweaked already in certain areas (Southern Calif, Las Vegas, San Fransisco, Middle-East etc.). The rest is builded from scratch (afaik). I encourage you all to support them. Every flight sim needs all the support they can get now a days :) I am impressed by the models they show us on the new web, at the same time I can't wait to get my hands on Flaming Cliffs :D.

No, this is a new development. All code has been and will be developed or purchased by us specifically for this project; this includes the X-Plane engine which is being used as the code base for Fighter Ops. The lessons learned from years of work on the Falcon code will enable us the opportunity to design a new simulator free of all the limitations inherent in the six year old Falcon 4.0 code." While this does not specifically states that it was ever intended to base FO on F4 code... it surely must have crossed their mind... specially after F4 code had a new owner (Atari) that might be interested in licensing it...
Caretaker Posted January 30, 2005 Posted January 30, 2005 Basically this whole F4 code confusion is a leftover from the G2I days. Those had planned to have Falcon4 OIR and then Falcon5 developed from the Falcon code. Then those plans were scrapped, and along came the Fighter Ops project, with new plans independent of Falcon. And then the project team dropped G2I in turn. Complicated stuff indeed... ;) Caretaker ED Beta Test Team

DarkStar Posted January 30, 2005 Posted January 30, 2005 yeah, complicated. But the reason Falcon gold and Falcon 5 was scrapped was not entirely G2i's fault... In the end it was Atari's decision (though I do not have all info yet :) )
SUBS17 Posted January 31, 2005 Author Posted January 31, 2005 I think it was a better idea to start from scratch rather than do Falcon 5 as x-plane is a very good engine for a flight sim. I'm very much looking forward to FO when its released. I'm also waiting patiently for FC, can't wait to do some crashes in the Su25T with AFM. cheers Subs [sIGPIC] [/sIGPIC]
