VR Flight Guy in PJ Pants Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 My current main equipment is a MSI laptop with the following spec: Processor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11800H @ 2.30GHz 2.30 GHz Installed RAM 32.0 GB (31.7 GB usable) System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor GPU: Nvidia RTX-3080 Laptop GPU with 8GB GDDR6 Can I "push" the HP to full resolution while maintaining "reasonable" performance as per my Meta (cough) Quest 2? speed-of-heat Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 Likely not. Depends on what you mean and at a guess you run at 72hz, so 37hz functionally with ASW? the physical resolution is 2160x2160 and it’s upscaled to 3000x3000 and change per eye so an extra 1/3 pixels, at 90hz or 45hz with motion smoothing so an extra 1/3 the number of frames. so if you are just getting good enough now, it will be suboptimal with the G2. Or you will need to lower some settings. 1 SYSTEM SPECS: Hardware AMD 9800X3D, 64Gb RAM, 4090 FE, Virpil T50CM3 Throttle, WinWIng Orion 2 & F-16EX + MFG Crosswinds V2, Varjo Aero SOFTWARE: Microsoft Windows 11, VoiceAttack & VAICOM PRO YOUTUBE CHANNEL: @speed-of-heat
VR Flight Guy in PJ Pants Posted February 5, 2022 Author Posted February 5, 2022 First, thanks. Second, I mean I can maintain 36fps at most of the time. I guess until I can get a true RTX-3080, I would stick with software solutions to please my eyes for now. I Fly, Therefore I Am. speed-of-heat Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 So at the same resolution you would have to be able to drive about another 10fps, and operate at about 70% in steam… SYSTEM SPECS: Hardware AMD 9800X3D, 64Gb RAM, 4090 FE, Virpil T50CM3 Throttle, WinWIng Orion 2 & F-16EX + MFG Crosswinds V2, Varjo Aero SOFTWARE: Microsoft Windows 11, VoiceAttack & VAICOM PRO YOUTUBE CHANNEL: @speed-of-heat
edmuss Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 (edited) Now I'll go the opposite and say potentially yes If you're happy to run at 60hz then I'd say yes, I can run high settings barring water, visibility and clouds at medium with MSAA 2x with steamvr at 100%. For reference A10C easy instant action I get 14-17ms unless the bomb crater bug pulls it down. This is with a discrete 3070fe so I'm not sure how that compares to the laptop 3080 but I'd hazard a guess that they're not too dissimilar. To boost the performance I run vrperfkit fsr @0.77 render scale with the standard settings fixed foveated render, the clearwater version of kegetys shader mod and the A10C low bit depth normal maps by Taz. edit: if you need 90Hz then no, not reliably. I have read that the G2 isn't that much of a jump better than the Q2. speed-of-heat Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 Good shout, I always discount the 30hz option because of the effect it has on me. edmuss Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 It's very hard to quantify the 60Hz refresh rate flicker, I think it mainly only affects the reverb screens as I never experienced it with my Lenovo explorer at 60Hz. I did notice the change initially but it's never bothered me and is completely invisible now. Svsmokey Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 I'm very happy running 60 hz . Allows me to run high Dcs settings and 100% resolution , and runs butter-smooth very low over cities while rolling , pulling and panning the view without any shader mods . Only time motion smoothing kicks in (seamlessly) is on airfields/supercarrier . 9700k @ stock , Aorus Pro Z390 wifi , 32gb 3200 mhz CL16 , 1tb EVO 970 , MSI RX 6800XT Gaming X TRIO , Seasonic Prime 850w Gold , Coolermaster H500m , Noctua NH-D15S , CH Pro throttle and T50CM2/WarBrD base on Foxxmounts , CH pedals , Reverb G2v2
DeltaMike Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 Kinda surprised your Quest 2 works. If it does, I'd stick with it. G2 is better on paper but it seems like most people with anything less than a 3090 are undersampling anyway. Also the user interface for the G2 is a pain in the gonads. Also the motion reprojection works better in the Oculus (ahem "Meta") products IMO (I went from Rift S to G2) Ryzen 5600X (stock), GBX570, 32Gb RAM, AMD 6900XT (reference), G2, WInwing Orion HOTAS, T-flight rudder
