Marianas Campaign Mission One Broken?

I've tried this 3 or 4 times now, and whenever I get within about 10 miles of WPT 2, it just completely freezes.  I even once gave it more than half an hour to see if it was "thinking", but that didn't help.

Anyone experience anything similar, and can anyone suggest some sort of fix?

I actually just did a complete reinstall.  Is there any way to maintain or save your "logbook", I'm a noob, so I was only a 1LT with a few medals and 15 or 20 hours worth of flying, but if I had a pilot that was a full bird colonel, with all the ribbons in the game, and 500+ hours that might sting a bit to lose.
