I know it is a bad idea to buy a gpu and not be able to run it. In my case I'd need a new PSU etc etc. And I really want to see the new AMD stuff coming out. How often does a GPU arrive DOA?  and some of the used gpu prices if they drop as far as he is estimating could be very good indeed. Almost worth the risk?

I'm upgrading this goround too, but I wouldn't be in a rush if I was you. I plan on waiting to see the supply situation, pricing, and if there's any significant defects or issues, ala the 2000 series being a medicore upgrade or the 3000 series having electrical issues early on (at least based on what I heard). Take your time and get everything you need.

As for arriving DoA, it's always possible, albeit rare. With a used card... also possible but rare, I've bought used cards multiple times and never had an issue. And despite the ''ebil miner'' trope, most mining cards are undervolted to reduce power consumption so are likely to be in BETTER shape than one that belonged to a ''1337 gamer overclocker''. I am waiting to see pricing, and will either get a new 4080 or a used 3080 as seems best at the time.

I also want to see benchmarks. ''9000% faster'' claims are made every generation but it rarely pans out as advertised.

So even with these "sales" how close are these new prices to msrp or below msrp?

It is last gen (some of the 40 series may be delayed?).  I would want to see lower prices still.

Cmon AMD/Intel give us some good stuff to drive prices lower.  Did I just say that about intel?

Prices will not sink much further, but they won't go up either.

You won't find a new 3080 Strix custom board for <$800 + tax.

Nvidia has halted manufacturing of 30's cards already, and will just wait and hold on 40 series until they have cleared out stock, so what if they don't launch til christmas.

AMD is nowhere near launching anything, we might start seeing early leaks q4 but nothing substantial til q2-23

Intel Arc just launched, that is nowhere near competing with the rest, top spec cards, their goal was low-mid tier, and is likely not going to until they hit Druid or what they want to call it maybe five years from now.

If you do want you can get below advertised MSRP but only with used cards. Saw for example 3090's on Ebay for $800.

As for a 40 series card, I don't even want one.

600W TDP in a time where 1kw will cost a $1 or more, just nope.

TBH, I think there will be a rush on 30 series cards when the peeps who waited to upgrade see the MSRP of the next gen stuff, AMD and NVidia know it.

Anyone thinking they'll be an equivalent price to current top tier MSRPs is dreaming...any game out today, 4K or VR, will run on a 30 series (or equivalent card) right now.

Ebay is your friend, the GPU makers aren't!

True reason for high prices is creation of cartels in the market, and "liberalization" of laws (liberal in this case means liberal to toward big companies, but common people).
With less competition (NVIDIA, AMD, and perhaps Intel), it is more easy to decide how to split the cake.

Its just takes 3 people to meet and agree, and delays that happened simultaneously hint at that.

Fairly good gaming PC 15-20 years ago did cost way less than today.

It doesn't matter at all.

Right now, 30 series cards are a buyers market, be it retailer or ebay. You are going to get a good deal.

The next gen stuff is going to be very pricey, AMD and Nvidia know how much PC gamers will spend for the "next best", even with the huge stock of 30 series cards.
