I had no idea this was a thing until I stumbled on this thread a couple days ago. Then, lo and behold, I hear it in person as one lands at KBFI. They get Hornets and Super Hornets frequently and the Eagle is sooo much quieter on approach aside from the VREET VREET from the actuators.

It was something I had not noticed on the F-16's of KB airbase until a couple of months ago, quite a distinctive sound, and usually as they pass overhead my house.

This weekend they were host to the F-35A demo team What. A. Noisy. Aircraft. Oh I am not looking forward to KeeBee getting the F-35, taking off and low speed cruising they are quite quiet but once accelerating man they make some noise far, far, louder than the F-16 on full Burner and the noise is quite distinctive with a whistling whine added to the roar

The P&W F100 series engines have the pneumatic nozzle actuator, that's why that distinctive nozzle sound. The GE F110 series, the F404, F414, The french engines, or the soviet-russian designs have hydraulic nozzle actuators, so their operation noise is way quieter. So as the P&W F119 or F135.

That unique nozzle sound is only the F100 family's speciality. This is the Convergent Exhaust Nozzle Control  (CENC), which drives the nozzle through bleed-air from the 13th compressor stage.

But the sound is from the CENC exhaust.  The five nozzle actuators are mechanical.  Four are connected to a master via a flex shaft.  Two flex shafts are connected run from the CENC to the master actuator.

They need to be louder on the ED F-15C, so I hope they are on the F-15E. They should be loud enough to be heard during the landing pattern, not just on the ground.

The sound is quite loud to the ears from the F-16s coming in to land at KB airbase, but you can hardly hear it if you try recording the sound, I know I've tried!
