MBot Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 I made a little Su-25 mission. Russian troops are under artillery attack in their camp in the Caucasus. Your mission is to fly CAS and destroy the artillery. Difficulty of the combat phase is relative low with the use of flare bombs for target illumination. But you better know how to shoot ILS approaches in the Frog :) Enjoy. http://mbot.catclan.ch/Su-25_NightCAS.mis
ZoomBoy27 Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 Labels on or off? NOTE: I recently play-tested a Mission that had a helicopter fly in front of the Player taking off. Its name was not the usual 'Pilot1' but 'Please turn off the labels' It was a cool reminder ZoomBoy My Flight Sims Page - Link to My Blog - Sims and Things - DCS Stuff++ - Up-to-Speed Guides to the old Lockon A10A and Su-25T - Some missions [needs update]
MBot Posted February 12, 2005 Author Posted February 12, 2005 No labels. I guess that would spoil the fun. Sorry, I didn't spend one tought that some other peopel use labels :)
ZoomBoy27 Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Finally had a chance to play it. I had to spend some time in training to get back my Su-25 skills and procedures. It's a simple but interesting night mission. I candle-bombed the area correctly but failed to wipe out the Artillery. I'll be back at it again. In the briefing you should let people know that they're going to have to follow a guide jeep out to the runway at the beginning of the mission. That was fun. Brit_Radar_Dude Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Nice to have guide jeep, I usually do this in my missions when I start from parking area (unless it is an airfield I know well). I assumed most folks are like me and too lazy to learn the taxiway layouts :D Nice that the artillery fire causes fires in the town which you can see as you get to about 20-30km range. Adds to the atmosphere. I managed to drop my candle bombs in just about the right place but they burned out too quick as I was too low. Had to use the puffs of smoke from the firing artillery as a guide which is tough! Whilst hunting for other missions on sites I happened across this useful Info from AlasRojas Spanish site. SAB-100 burn times from AlasRojas ALTURA TIEMPO 1.000 m. 1:10 min. 2.000 m. 2:48 min. 3.000 m. 4:28 min. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Sorry Death, you lose! It was Professor Plum....
Greenies Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 I've never used those SAB-100 Flares. How do they work? Do you dive-bomb them, or just release them when you reach your target waypoint? How wide an area do they illuminate? Another thing: I wish I had night-vision goggles in my Su-25 :x I want to get away, I wanna fly away. Yeah, yeah, yeah! - Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away
MBot Posted February 15, 2005 Author Posted February 15, 2005 Glad you guys liked it. One thing to remeber about the candle bombs. You got a pair of them ( default loadout for that mission ), but unusual for he Su-25 the SAB-100 gets droped single. So when you see that your first candle bomb is about to dimish, drop the second one. @Greenies: You can drop the SAB-100 in any attitude you want. The bomb will release several parachuted flares on its way down, that illuminate the area for the times given by Brit_Radar_Dude, depending on the drop altidue ( btw, thanks for those ! ). Illumination is around a radius of about 2nm I would guess. The best way to drop them in my mission. Approach the target waypoint in a steady level flight, at about 2500-3000m. Once the range to waypoint drops to zero, release one bomb. Then head around and enjoy the show :)
Brit_Radar_Dude Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 Greenie, the target waypoint is a little before the location of the enemy artillery (check the map before you hit FLY) so you might want to release your SAB-100 a little after you pass the waypoint. The SAB-100 bomb drops some distance then deploys a number of flares (actually 7) one by one. (Try dropping one then press F6 to watch it deploy the flares. The area illuminated is thus a slightly stretched circle. I dont dive, as I want to try and be as high as possible to get maximum illumination time (see earlier post for height / time). Because the bomb deploys 7 flares the illumination is quite bright. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Sorry Death, you lose! It was Professor Plum....

Actualy, once you go into A-G mode, the HSI will display range and heading to your designated ground target.
Brit_Radar_Dude Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 Well, you learn something new every day, I never realised that, I'll have to watch for that next time I fly a Russian jet mission..... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Sorry Death, you lose! It was Professor Plum....
MBot Posted February 15, 2005 Author Posted February 15, 2005 I guess its the russian equivalent to the A-10s magic "laser designated target" diamond.
Greenies Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 Thanks for the tips and instructions, everyone. Will try them out next time I get the opportunity :) I want to get away, I wanna fly away. Yeah, yeah, yeah! - Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away
Kula66 Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 Nice mission ... loved the jeep escort ... the first time he stopped I only just missed smashing into him!!! Never flown at night in the Frog ... nav is certanly fun! Thanks, James
enigma6584 Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 Excellent mission Mbot. I'm very much enjoying it. In fact I've started making some night-time missions myself. Pretty intense stuff flying by instruments at night low and in the winding canyons and valley of Georgia. Cheers.
AldoUSMC Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Employing the SAB 100 Illumination Bomb Hi All, I've created and posted two videos on YouTube to help flyers understand the effects and employment of the SAB 100 Illumination Bomb. The links to the vids are posted on another thread here. You can see that thread here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=26072&highlight=SAB+100 Hope you find them useful.
