Radar Lock

i'm learning the f-16 currently and following along Chuck's guide. But I'm having issues getting target tracks on the FCR even with bogeys right in front of me. If you look at the screenshot there are 2 mig 19's at my 12 o'clock 13nm but I can't get so much as a blip on the radar. I know the radar is working because I just shot down a bomber in the area a minute ago.

To further test I enabled active pause and just sat there watching the Migs fly around in different aspects but still no go. Am I too far away from them? Are the Mig's too small to get picked up by radar? Neither observations seem correct but I just dont know.

Thakns for any help.

Check your radar elevation, your radar is looking way too high.

On your radar cursor, you can see the numbers 56 and 67; these represent the lower and upper altitude coverage (in thousands of feet) of your radar pattern, at that range.
Also check the small, blue, horizontal marks and the sideways T symbol on the left side; the marks represent vertical offset, with the larger, central mark representing the horizon (so, your altitude).

You'll see that you're at 43k ft, while both targets are a bit below you. You can also see that you're scanning above you (56-67) and the T caret is above the horizon.

What you need to do is lower the radar elevation, so that you're actually scanning the altitude your targets are located in (in that case, slightly below you). Remember that your radar scan pattern widens as range increases, so you might need to re-adjust radar elevation as you get closer.

After you bug or lock a target with TMS Up, the radar will attempt to automatically adjust its scan pattern to maintain the track of the target.

Cheers

After you destroy a target and lose the lock on said target, your radar antenna elevation doesn’t reset to neutral, but will rather stay at the elevation it was in when you had the target locked.  As Harker pointed out, once you ‘bug’ or lock a target, your plane will automatically adjust the antenna elevation to keep your target in the center of the scan area.

What almost certainly happened here was you locked up the bomber, but the bomber was above you in elevation so your FCR moved the antenna up in elevation to center it.  Once you destroyed the bomber, the radar lost lock and stayed in that elevated position.

Also, when you are as close to the enemies as in the picture I would suggest switching to one of the ACM radar modes (aka dogfight modes).  All of the radar queuing will be on your HUD/HMD, and the radar will automatically lock the first thing it sees w/o having to mess around with your DDI.

Have a look at these two videos:

Although they are for the hornet, they teach some good A2A radar detection concepts.
