DCS: F-100D Super Sabre Introducing the Hun

We are thrilled to announce DCS: F-100D Super Sabre by Grinnelli Designs. The “Hun” is a single seat, single engine fighter designed by North American Aviation that was the original fighter in the legendary Century Series. The Super Sabre was the first USAF fighter capable of supersonic speeds in level flight. Flown extensively in Vietnam, its contribution was irreplaceable.

The F-100D is an advanced version of the Super Sabre that features improved avionics, landing flaps, and larger wings and tail fin. The upgraded avionics include the AN/AJB-1B low-altitude bombing system and an AN/APR-25 radar homing and warning system.

The F-100D has four 20 mm Pontiac M39A1 cannons, and it has six hardpoints capable of carrying AIM-9 Sidewinders, LAU-3/A unguided rocket pods, and conventional bombs.

The Super Sabre fighter bomber flew extensively over Vietnam as the United States Air Force's primary close air support jet. The F-100 was in service for 17 years and flew over 360,000 combat sorties before it was retired in 1971.

DCS: F-100D Super Sabre aspires to be the most faithful re-creation of the Hun ever produced for flight simulation. Working with veteran Hun pilots, the Grinnelli team is dedicated to simulating the avionics systems, weapons, performance, and unique flight model in high fidelity.

I serviced an F-100 many years ago, can't see it in this photo but it did have a Swiss tail.

Fantastic!!  I was a Crew Chief of this Hun for 4 years, 1963-1967 Great Heavy old Bird.  Loved it.  I'll try to be the first to purchase, hope it will be here sooner than a year 🙂

F-100D Development Report

The F-100D Super Sabre is a renowned supersonic fighter-bomber that served with the United States Air Force during the Cold War era. As part of the ongoing development efforts for DCS, the F-100D module aims to provide authenticity and immersion whilst flying this iconic aircraft. To achieve this, Grinelli Designs has collaborated with enthusiasts and members of the Collings Foundation, who granted them access to an exceptionally well-preserved F-100, which has been extensively scanned and photographed.

Utilizing advanced 3D scanning technologies and photogrammetry we have obtained precise measurements, shapes, and textures of the exterior and cockpit. All data was then processed and refined before being sent to our 3D art team to be used as accurate reference for modeling & texturing. The following areas were addressed to enhance the F-100D Super Sabre module:

Exterior Model:
Detailed photography serves as the foundation for creating an accurate exterior model of the F-100D. This included refining the aircraft's overall shape, panel lines, surface details, and textures. The goal was to recreate the iconic appearance of the Super Sabre with the utmost fidelity, allowing users to appreciate its unique design features.

Cockpit Model:
The 3D scans provide invaluable references for recreating the F-100D's cockpit. Every switch, knob, gauge, and control panel can be meticulously replicated to reflect the real-world counterpart. The integration of accurate cockpit lighting and functional elements further adds to the immersive experience of operating the aircraft.

Sound Design:
To complement the visual and flight model improvements, the development team additionally recorded a multitude of sounds from the cockpit enhancing the audio experience associated with the F-100D Super Sabre.

Current Progress:
The current development progress of the F-100D module is steadily moving forward, with the module currently in a flyable state. We have made significant progress in various areas, including the flight model, engine, fuel and hydraulic systems, which are currently undergoing alpha testing. Additionally, we are actively testing and refining the core systems of the aircraft, such as electrical, radio, radio navigation, TACAN, oxygen, lighting, IFF, seek silence, and base weapon systems. These systems are being fine tuned to ensure their functionality and authenticity in the aircraft. Comprehensive testing allows us to identify and address any issues or improvements necessary to deliver an immersive F-100D experience to the community.

Future Development:
The integration of 3D scans has significantly improved the accuracy and fidelity of the F-100D Super Sabre module in DCS World. However, our commitment to ongoing development means that there are still further improvements to be made. Our future plans include:

  • Continuously refining and optimizing the exterior and cockpit models based on feedback from the community and subject matter experts.
  • Fine-tuning the flight model to ensure a more realistic and enjoyable flight experience.
  • Weapon system implementation and integration.
  • Expanding the available liveries and customization options to provide a wider range of visual variations.
  • Collaborating with real F-100D pilots and experts to incorporate their insights and knowledge into the module's development.

F-100D Super Sabre Development Report

“Our dedicated team completed an extensive journey across Texas, Georgia, Ohio, and Indiana, meticulously scanning F-100 aircraft to guarantee the utmost quality and precision. With the infusion of these invaluable resources, our team is channelling creativity and expertise to bring the Super Sabre to life, ensuring every detail captures and preserves the essence of this iconic aircraft.”

– Grinnelli Designs

An exceptional experience took place in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where an immersive week unfolded due to a fuel valve failure with the last flying F-100. This unforeseen event offered a unique opportunity to engage in detailed aircraft maintenance, capturing essential sounds and aerial footage. These experiences, complemented by insights from veterans, will play a crucial role in shaping this highly realistic module.

The project is progressing steadily, focusing on the development of a comprehensive and accurate flight model for the Super Sabre. Through a combination of computational methods, real aerodynamic data, and wind tunnel tests, the team is meticulously refining the model to accurately replicate the intricate dynamics of the actual aircraft. This effort stands as a testament to the team's commitment to delivering a high-quality, authentic experience in the world of DCS.

insomma fanno sul serio.

a me stuzzicherebbe uno hun. 🙂

Già, ricordo da bambino di aver visto spesso quello esposto a Vigna di Valle. Come tutti i tipi impiegati in Vietnam mi stuzzica proprio
