Xupicor Posted August 31, 2022 Posted August 31, 2022 I know BFO refers to Beat Frequency Oscillator. It's a type of oscillator, it can be used in a given circuit to generate a signal of some needed frequency to do... Well, stuff. Depends. What does it do in the Huey? Is it supposed to be part of a frequency shifter making morse code in ADF radio audible? (Doesn't seem to work like that in DCS) Is it generating a constant tone heard when tuning a radio? (Not sure I can hear anything like that) Responsible for generating a carrier frequency? An own "beacon" frequency so that one Huey can be a Pathfinder and the rest can tune their ADF to its signal to follow? I couldn't find much about what it's supposed to do (mostly interested in the real thing, even if DCS doesn't model it). Windows 11 Pro, RTX4090 (24GB), 5950X @ 4.3GHz, 64GB RAM @ 3000MHz, M.2 SSD 8TB, Pimax Crystal Modules and maps: All of 'em. (It's a problem...)
Tanuki44 Posted August 31, 2022 Posted August 31, 2022 (edited) An explanation here, but in French... https://aviation.narkive.fr/54826wYM/comment-et-quand-utiliser-le-bouton-bfo-sur-un-adf Edited August 31, 2022 by Tanuki44 2
Xupicor Posted August 31, 2022 Author Posted August 31, 2022 (edited) So it generates and inserts a local carrier frequency to make a signal audible for beacons that transmit "sans carrier freq". Alright! That makes sense. Does it work in DCS? Can we set up such radio beacons in ME? DishDoggie Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 BFO? I Only Know what a BFR is. I took one to the Face.
Flappie Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 (edited) More info here pages 9 to 16: Quote The control unit function switch enables the selection of three operating modes: ADF mode for automatic direction finding, homing to a radio station, and position fixing; ANT (antenna) mode for radio range navigation or use as a radio broadcast station receiver; and LOOP mode for manual direction finding or when using aural null for homing and position fixing. In any operating mode, the direction finder set will provide an aural output of any audio modulating the radio station rf carrier. A beat frequency oscillator (BFO) aids in tuning for zero beat* OR supplying audio for continuous-wave (CW) signals. ... "Adf Operation / Homing to Radio Station" ... If audio is desired, rotate GAIN control to the right and adjust for a comfortable sound level. If radio station transmission is continuous wave, set BFO/OFF switch to BFO. ... "Manual Loop Operation" ... Set BFO/OFF switch to BFO and adjust GAIN control for minimum audio output. Tune for acro heat on radio station. Turn BFO/OFF switch OFF. ... "Preflight (Daily) Operational Check" ... A. Set control unit function switch to ANT. See that tuning meter, panel, and FREQUENCY dial are illuminated. Allow 5 minutes for equipment warmup. B. Set range switch to the frequency range of a radio station. Adjust TUNE control for radio station and maximum tuning meter indication. Note FREQUENCY dial reading under the hairline. C. Set BFO/OFF switch to BFO. D. Adjust TUNE control for zero beat in headset. The FREQUENCY dial reading should be identical with that obtained in B, above. Turn BFO- OFF switch to OFF. ... *Demonstration of zero beat (there's a simple definition in the end, at 08:41 - "Getting your radio dead on top of a reference signal, to the point where that tone drops down to where that ondulation stops. And your frequency on your radio is precisely in sync with your source tone"). The answer given here is also interesting. All of the above reminds me that I don't know anything about real life radio transmissions and frequencies. Edited September 4, 2022 by Flappie typo 1 1 ---
Tanuki44 Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 (edited) Intéressant... Y aurait il un exemple concret de mise en pratique dans DCS ? Is there an tangible example of use in DCS? Edited September 4, 2022 by Tanuki44
