linklemming Posted September 6, 2022 Posted September 6, 2022 Just started playing with the A-8 and after reducing the throttle to get into formation with some 109s, the engine quit. Luckily I deadsticked the landing safely. Is there a procedure to restart engine in flight? I searched Chucks guide and did various google searches.
grafspee Posted September 6, 2022 Posted September 6, 2022 Engine quit, do you mean that engine stopped completely or just loose power ? If engine/prop stopped completely, it mean that engine seized up and engine is dead no way to restart it. If the engine/prop still spinning but not producing thrust, this mean that you probably run out of fuel, in piston engines there is not such thing like flame out. 2 System specs: I7 14700KF, Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite, 64GB DDR4 3600MHz, Gigabyte RTX 4090,Win 11, 48" OLED LG TV + 42" LG LED monitor
linklemming Posted September 6, 2022 Author Posted September 6, 2022 (edited) Thanks for the reply, Im still new to the A-8 so it is certainly possible I didnt do something correctly during startup although I have been flying the A-8 with my own startup for a few hours now without issue The issue occurred while reducing throttle completely while trying to get in formation with some AI flying 109s. At first, the prop stopped and started a few times and then the prop stopped completely. I will try to recreate Update: I recall monitoring oil temps and fuel and it happened a few minutes after takeoff Couldnt seem to create this condition in the caucas instant action free flight. With the throttle all the way closed it behaves like I expect (prop just spins slowly forever) Probably something I did incorrectly in startup Thanks for the help Edited September 7, 2022 by linklemming
grafspee Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 (edited) The most important question is , can you replicate this, maybe you encountered some bug You can up load track from your mission here, i or someone else take a look. Art-J Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Just took the plane for a spin and it seems that as long as the fuel pressure is up, prop windmills, engine is healthy and it was stopped in flight accidently by moving throttle to stop detent or switching off magnetos, one just has to move the throttle back to anywhere in "run" range, switch on magnetos an the engine will come back to life immediately. @linklemming you must've probably bumped something else by accident, which deprived the engine of fuel or ignition. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.

Then, if you take off with full throttle the engine RPM will be over the limit and may even stay there after reducing the throttle. This will damage the engine and it will fail later. Note that a damaged engine tends to break/stop when reducing the throttle. So when rtb with a battle-damaged engine better keep the throttle where it is and reduce the speed e.g. by climbing. Only reduce the throttle when you can afford to glide home, e.g. before touchdown.
