Hi guys,

Does anyone know how the two air-to-air Shkval sub-modes work and, more specifically, what's the best way of locking up an aerial target?

For the last couple of nights I've be trying and retrying the mission in which someone tries to escape from a heavily defended area in a transport helicopter. On the one occasion when I was close enough and well positioned enough to see the helicopter, it was effectively beaming me and I couldn't get the Shkval gates over it and locked up fast enough.

I tried heading after it in pursuit, but that took me within range of an infantry guy with an Igla that I'd missed...

Boom. :(

Any helpful suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Amusingly, I've just noticed the three-page-long discussion of why you should never even attempt air-to-air in a helicopter.

Get on his six and go guns! Easiest and most satisfying method. :) Serioulsy though, use HMS, padlock the bandit and then uncage the shkval. This will slew the Shkval over what your looking at. Using the smallest target size setting and being real close (<1km) helps too.

Alternatively, let your wingman loose on 'im. They're pretty good versus bandits (by that I mean better than me!)

Finally, if you have run out of bullets, if your wingmen is not available/out of ammo, and if you have rockets, you can shoot him down with rockets also.

I find it all a bit hit and miss really, I select the A/A targeting button, then the HMS, sometimes it takes two or three tries to get a lock, if i'm far enough away I try for a Vikhr, if not I go to cannon. Seems pretty successful so far, it's just getting that target lock, failing all of that switch your sight to boresight and try it the old fashioned way.

I haven't tried that but saw someone do it on Youtube. Looked cool, must try it for myself!

Don't forget the boresight mode of the HUD!

Best regards,

Tango.

How do you set the HUD to Boresight?

I believe what Tango means is to set the cannon to manual targeting. On the Targeting Mode Control Panel, where you switch Ground target on or off, or turn the K-041 on or off, there is a rotary knob. Place it in the MAN position, should be one click clockwise from the AUTO, and the gun will lock on a "straight ahead" mode, not swiveling anymore.

The HUD will show the cannon boresight as a green circle. Place your target in that circle (or not, if you are leading the shot due to a turn), and let it loose.

Only way I've been able to take them down is to chase them and cannon them with boresight mode. If I try the HMS then the darn thing moves too fast for me to lock in the shkval.

Seeing as the KA-50 isn't a A-A platform though, I hope there's someone else around that can take care of them.

Have you tried holding down the uncage/designate button? This slaves it to where your looking should ensure it stays on target while you press the target lock button. Also, keep the target size brackets to their smallest setting.
