Enigma's Cold War Sister server will be here soon!

This server is truly a sister server that will embodied the ideals and feel that ECW brought to the DCS MP community.

The key differences are as follows:

                     1) Weather/Night Operations :
-Given the data we acquired from ECW and the frequent asks for more inclement weather and night/dusk operations, we've decided to add more of that here. The reasoning is simple. The planes and radars are more advanced so the mk1 eyeball isn't as important as it is with the ECW plane set, which allows us to experiment with more difficult visibility conditions without alienating the target audience. You will see more varied weather and lighting conditions than you will see clear skies. If this becomes an issue, we will obviously make changes, but at the start, expect to dust off those IFR procedures.

                   2) Modern jets... but not too modern. MFDs are the mind killer is still somewhat of a thing; however, we've made more exceptions here to better differentiate us from the ECW planeset ... that said things we won't budge on... anything with a JHMCS so that means no hornet, no viper. Don't ask, it won't happen. Sorry.

                   3) Buddy Lazing, we have a planned feature to allow helicopters to drop fixed jtacs to laze strategic targets. PGMs (precision guided munitions) are allowed on this server, however, you need to work with another person in order to use them. We are experimenting with how best to do this, but the idea of soloing targets with your LGBs is not going to happen. Either ground based jtacs, or spotting aircraft/helos will be required for you to employ an PGMs. We want to allow for more modern weapon systems, but force people to work together, as they would IRL, in order to make them work. So that means no targeting pods and loads of GBUs...

                  4) IADS... bigger SAM threats are a thing. We are using MANTIS air defense network in order to provide and integrated air defense system. There are major SAM threats at the strategic industrial targets now. On top of that, neither team has their own ARGMs to deal with them. You'll have to work with the new SEAD flight mechanic in order to suppress these threats, and/or other get creative with your wild weaseling and toss bombing. No fire and forget HARMS here.

When are we going live? -

Target is the end of this month or early next month so 2-3 weeks from this post. This date may flex depending on what our close testing team finds. If you're interested in helping test, please join the discord below. Thanks!

Please only support if you are financial able to do so. We currently do not have any recurring costs, but in order to add features like Overlord bot we'll need some community support. That said this is a project of passion, and we do not "need" financial support to bring this server to you. So please do NOT feel pressure to support unless you're just as crazy as we are. Thank you! Good Hunting.

I am really happy to see something like this finally done ! Way to go ! Reading through your faq i wanted to offer a few thoughts on the plane selection you are planning.

The A10C and AH64D are both mid 2000´s airframes, fall waaaay out of the timeframe and in my opinion especially the ah64d feels very weird in an 80´s scenario. Also having a limited plane selection with two A10´s with so similar cpabilities seems a bit redundant. On the other hand the NA Harrier entered service before a lot of planes on your list, offers interesting gameplay and i think it would balance out nicely but will not be available.

Having the F14 exclusive to redfor in a caucasus scenario seems like a big immersion breaker, i totally get why you plan to do it that way, but maybe substituting the F15 with the F14 is a better option ?

Again, just a few thoughts, in any case the best of luck with this cool project.

2000s digital avionics, glass cockpit, GPS  Apache or Warthog obviously have nothing to do with 1980s damaging whole atmosphere. There is already many 2000s servers if i want to fly Apache or Warthog.

But looking at current DCS modules being developed right now 1980s late Cold War is going to be filled with biggest amount of period correct full fidelity flayable machines among all periods; A-7E, Su-17, A-6E, MiG-23MLA, Tornado IDS, F-4E, Bolkov 105, early Kiowa, Kfir. We already have F-14A/B, MiG-21bis, Mirage F.1, F-5E, Mi-24, Mi-8, UH-1 extensively used during 1980s. Most FC3 MiG-29A, F-15C, A-10A, Su-25A, Su-27S. No need to take 2000s digital / GPS 2000s modules making the server generic like any 2000s server. I suspect it might have something to do with many period correct modules are still being work on.

Great idea creating this server and such setup. Keep up!

I have no issue with excluding the Hornet and Viper, but isn’t there an option in the Mission Editor to exclude the JHMCS for both of those jets?

Disregard. It was pointed out to me that players can still select them from the F10 menu

I usually fly alot Tempest Blue flag and enjoy it but I'm afraid that including too many "modern" jets, even with some limitations, in the long run will be an error.

There are already alot many modern focused server online, why shifting even more the target towards modern era? Just now Mirage 2000 and AV8 on the blue side and Su-27/MiG-29 on red side are dominant, introducing the 16 and 18 will be a wrong move.

Hello, I found from the red side that the f14 do not have datalink, probably because the awac is Russian, which would not be a problem if I could use the F2F with my partner but it doesn't seem to work either.

I like recon, but it's not obvious how it works, and I've seen others in chat complain about issues getting it to work.

From the recon math here:
https://github.com/Yink059/DCS-Scripts/blob/main/recon.lua

You can map out where the average recon plane can see things:

Recon graph

The angle of your plane doesn't seem to affect the direction of the camera, it's just checked to make sure your plane is 'within tolerance'.

Also, there don't appear to be the equivalent of ray-casts from the plane to the terrain, it seems to calculate where the point on the terrain height-map is, and doesn't check if a mountain or something is in the way of your camera.

The actual target scan is done with a sphere on the target point, not a cylinder from space or a cone from the plane.

It's not super clear to me what the pulse rate it, but I think it might be 2 second delay after enabling, and then a pulse every half-second.

This all may or may not be accurate, I'm not sure if that script is the same version that's running on the server, and it's possible I overlooked some quirks of it, I didn't stare too long at it.

Hope that helps some other people who like recon but maybe had trouble figuring it out.
