so i am complety missing how targeting works these days

in the old days when you did not laser the target you would use the target rose after locking

if you lased after locking the rose would snap to a proper kill alignment

this no longer works

using the rose will overshoot the target

so for now i just lase the target and hope for a hit

Was the aiming circle ever that accurate?

i actually only ever use the laser+ tracking mode and that is about the most accurate you can get.

driving targets at 3km no problem

Spoiler

In general don't use the little aiming helper circle, the M1 will superelevate the gun for you when you lase the target and the target tracking mode (despite it and the stabilisers jankiness) will take care of lead (though there's no way to dump lead without turning it completely off and on again).

If you don't lase and don't use target tracking mode, you can use the aiming circle - if you lase or you target tracking mode (or both) then don't use the aiming circle.

The Aiming circle used to work, but recent updates made it inaccurate unless you are on flat ground.  So most artillery it still is somewhat effective against infantry but less so for targets requiring more precision.
