I've never been much of an AA kinda guy (more into ground attack), so please take it easy on me if this was discussed before. I did do a quick forum search on this topic, but without luck. Also, I suppose this is not really Viper related, but as I noticed this while having a brief affair with that other Viper sim that recently got VR support, I thought I might as well ask here 😉

So, in that other "25 years old" Viper sim, AWACS only does bullseye callouts, whereas DCS AWACS gives BRA calls.

Which of these is commonly used irl? (which should be considered more realistic?)

I can imagine bullseye callouts being more useful, as they can be done one time and have all flights in the AO informed at once, but maybe I'm missing something here?

(I did manage to figure out how to respond to bullseye calls. Quite a bit more difficult than just to a BRA call 🥵)

Thanks guys. Although difficult I suppose, it would be cool if ED could somehow manage to implement both callout methods

AWACS in the other sim gives BRAA callouts once you get close enough. Bullseye is quite useful for everyone on the channel, but the further the target is from the bullseye, the less precise it becomes (it's polar coordinates, so each angle covers more and more space with each mile out). DCS was not designed around a proper radio system, so it uses BRAA, which are easier to interpret for a single fighter. I hope this is something they're looking at as part of the comms overhaul.

Ah ok, that's cool. Haven't noticed that yet (probably because I'm shot down well before I get close enough 😅)

Well, the carrier callouts are mostly OK, if excessive for actual cyclic ops. It helps that they're fairly new. JTAC comms do follow the right procedures, at least (although real JTACs are much less rigid in their talkon). That's about it, though. ATC, AWACS/GCI comms, wingmen comms are all fairly bad.
