maxTRX Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 (edited) I started getting occasional micro stutters on Open XR (No tool kit). Uninstalled OpenXR and fired up SteamVR (re-installed). Not a single stutter over any area in Syria. I'm running at 150% G2 res., no AA, AFx16, everything maxed. No tinkering, no spreadsheets or graphs. Immediate smoothness and speed. FPS is roughly the same as in OpenXR (50 ~ 90). I realize I'm an oddball here but until my rig runs OpenXR without hiccup and weeks of tinkering to achieve the same smoothness I get now right of the bat... I'm on Steam (offline). I just hope that OpenXR doesn't get 'mandated', at least until fully ready. Edited January 31, 2023 by oldcrusty 2
Wolf8312 Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 Hum, I've had microstutters either way (Open XR, and Steam VR) to be honest. This time I got rid of them (using steam VR) with a few things (motherboard setting, and the DCS rectangle res setting: not sure which -if either- worked) while also switching to open XR (which in iteself helped a little) but there's so many damned variables it's always impossible to know for sure! It seems that sometimes the game just decides to start working properly! ------------ 3080Ti, i5- 13600k 32GB VIVE index, VKB peddals, HOTAS VPC MONGOOSE, WARTHOG throttle, BKicker,
RealDCSpilot Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 (edited) @oldcrusty Please check your terms and context. There is already enough confusion and there is technically no way SteamVR can beat OpenXR. What you mean is OpenComposite or your post wouldn't make any sense. You also can't uninstall OpenXR. OpenXR is a component of SteamVR, it's also a component of OpenComposite in that sense. I can only assume that you actually meant that you were trying to run your G2 over OpenComposite and then compared it to running it with SteamVR. There is still some info missing here, were you running SteamVR with OpenVR or OpenXR? Since the latest hotfix for DCS Open Beta disabled autoswitching to OpenXR, i can only guess the right phrasing of your post should be: "SteamVR with OpenVR beats OpenComposite with OpenXR on my rig" ?? Is that what you wanted to say? For other users it would be more helpful to phrase your VR path correctly (Oculus VR not included): SteamVR -> OpenVR -> DCS (one of the standards before the OpenXR update for DCS) or SteamVR -> OpenXR -> DCS (hotfix after the OpenXR update for DCS, now available through command line parameter "DCS.exe --force_OpenXR") or OpenComposite (with or without the tool kit)-> OpenXR -> OpenVR ->DCS (standard before the OpenXR update for DCS) or OpenComposite (with or without the tool kit)-> OpenXR -> DCS DCS (hotfix after the OpenXR update for DCS, now available through command line parameter "DCS.exe --force_OpenXR") or this is new! Windows Mixed Reality (your G2's native VR runtime) WMR -> OpenXR -> DCS (hotfix after the OpenXR update for DCS, now available through command line parameter "DCS.exe --force_OpenXR") You see, there are these 5 possibilities, but nobody knows exactly what you are trying to say about your findings. OK, agreed. I didn't spend too much time selecting the proper nomenclature out of this chaos. I was still a bit 'Steamed' about the way the update was done. I've never used OpenComposite, never downloaded it. I never felt the need to do that. Yes, I was actually running SteamVR with OpenVR. I did install MS OpenXR Tools. Reprojection was disabled (I've never used it at any time) Res. at 100%. After the latest patch, I did try the switch with DCS.exe shortcut... well, actually I put the --force_OpenXR part outside of the quote mark. The way you wrote it, it should've probably be within... Anyways, the DCS loaded up, the hanger screen showed up and disappeared. That was it for me. I didn't feel like running through trial and error type of routine... I needed to smoke some Flankers and I did, eventually
maxTRX Posted January 31, 2023 Author Posted January 31, 2023 Since I don't know how to change the title of this thread, to '... OpenVR' instead of OpenXR, perhaps a mod could do it.
RealDCSpilot Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 Don't worry, putting the command line options outside the question marks is fine for making a custom shortcut. The way i wrote it is just the general command line (if you launch DCS from a .bat or simply from cmd.). However, in a couple months we all will never need to look back at this confusion. DCS on OpenXR all the time, plus Vulkan and Multithreading should be the standard way then. 1 1 i9 13900K @5.5GHz, Z790 Gigabyte Aorus Master, RTX4090 Waterforce, 64 GB DDR5 @5600, PSVR2, Pico 4 Ultra, HOTAS & Rudder: all Virpil with Rhino FFB base made by VPforce, DCS: all modules
