Hallsy
Hello All, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for Viggen related reading. I enjoy reading pilot accounts which provide some insight into standard sortie types, procedures, tactics etc. I have delved into the pages of technical pdf files uploaded on the forum and was curious to see if there is anything else out there in English or Swedish in electronic format that can be translated. Thanks!
Otulf
Hello Hallsy! Perhaps this page could be interesting: https://www.aef.se/Flygvapnet/Notiser/FPL37_Viggen.htm and this: https://tanks.mod16.org/2016/08/29/saab-aj-and-ajs-37-viggen-flight-manuals-sfi/ A couple of books about the Viggen that I really like: Nordic Airpower #5 Saab 37 Viggen ISBN 978-87-993688-1-6. The text is in English. AIRDOC ADP 015, Swedish VIGGENs, ISBN 978-3-935687-15-7.The text is in both English and German. Saab 37 Viggen Walk Around, ISBN 978-0-89747-717-8. The text is in English. VIGGEN, Sven Stridsberg, ISBN 978-91-7266-201-8. Text is in Swedish I´m afraid but a VERY good book. Best regards: Otulf

Otulf
Good evening Hallsy! I bought my copy of Nordic Airpower #5 Saab 37 Viggen and Saab 37 Viggen Walk Around at a aviation museum i southern of Sweden called Ängelholm (Former F10 Wing). It was one of Swedish airbases to fly the AJS 37 Viggen and is now a museum. (As you probably already know) Link to the museum´s shop below: https://engelholmsflygmuseum.morefloshop.com/produkt-kategori/bocker/page/3/ This book is big and great but quite costly. 420 Swedish kronor is aprox 40.62 US Dollar at today's rating... Have a nice weekend! Best regards: Otulf
ValhallaAB
A good swedish book I recommend is ''System 37 Viggen'' by SFF (Svensk Flyghistorisk Förening) Ulf Edlund and Hans Kampf are the editorial managers. 223 pages of great data and insight by testpilots and mechanical engineers over the years before and after the Viggen, published in 2009 and SFF has made a similar book on the J-35 Draken which is amazing. If you only want digital or english I sadly have very few tips.
Otulf
Hello! I totally agree with ValhallaAB that System 37 Viggen is a very good book about Viggen. ISBN 0345-3413. Good recommendation there ValhallaAB! There is yet another book that is written in Swedish, but quite good, and that is SMB:s AJ 37 Viggen written by Jan Forsgren. ISBN 978-91-88885-63-0 SMB (Svenskt Militärhistoriskt Bibliotek) is a bookclub about military history. (SMB is, as far as I know, a Swedish variant of the British Pen & Sword) SMB have also produced a good book, written by Jan Forsgren, about the fighterversion of Viggen (JA 37) ISBN 978-91-88885-81-4 A interesting article about British Jaguar pilot that flew together with swedish Viggens (page 32, 33 and 34): https://www.collectair.co.uk/pdf/interview-hr.pdf Best regards: Otulf
Hallsy
Hi Gentlemen, I REALLY appreciate all the amazing book recommendations. I have purchased Nordic Airpower #5 Saab 37 Viggen from your link and read System 37! It is sad that so many books are out of print or selling for insane prices online. Many thanks and do keep the links coming if you have any more suggestions! Hallsy

I wonder what he means , when he wrote the swedish pilot flew a hands off 4 degree approach , with his hands literally on his head? 4 degrees is probably the approach descent angle,ok. But I thought the autopilot couldn't do approaches in the Viggen? Or was that changed in the JA variant? Regards, Snappy
Leviathan667
thanks for the links esp. to the swedish AF manuals. In the following manual Fpl AJ 37 speciell förarinstruktion (SFI) del 2 (M7780-400172), on p. 152 (after a detailed description on the use of the Lysbomber) under ANFALL BOMBER, it says Utges senare which means to be issued later. In the other manuals, I can't find anything regarding the use of SB/71s (Save System 37 but it is not as detailed as the AF manuals). Does anyone have a declassified AF manual with details regarding the use of SB/71s? Otulf
Hello Leviathan! I am not sure if It is this "ändring 90" (Correction 90) they refer to with "utges senare" (issued/published later)? This pdf: SFI AJ 37 del 2 kap 1 ändring 90 (pack of updated pages for SFI AJ 37 del 2 kap 1, formerly classified secret) Page 187 to 190. renhanxue
The manual would get updates regularly, "ändring 90" means it's update number 90 to the manual. It contains only the pages changed in that particular update, and I don't think it contains all of the bombing section. Unfortunately I didn't manage to find a complete and fully update manual at the national archives, so what's been posted is incomplete. The section on rb 75 is also missing. I won't have any opportunities to fix this any time soon.
