BlackReef Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 The SR-71 free module is the best SR-71 module we have available and to be honest it's not bad. Of course, it doesn't have a cockpit. Or a decent flight model. And it's missing all the cool details that you find in a decently high-fidelity aircraft. But the 3D model of the aircraft is good, and it's symmetrically and aesthetically pleasing. Now, Im just a graphic designer by trade, but the one thing this mod could REALLY benefit from right now is a proper visual afterburner model. Currently the torches just look like 2D yellow cones coming out the back. Would it be a difficult task to modify these afterburners to match some of the other higher fidelity aircraft modules we have available for DCS? I know nothing about modelling, just some basic skinning experience. Thoughts? 3
Spino Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 (edited) You could try swapping for a different afterburner effect. The one that it uses currently is a custom effect that isn't very good tbh. I know VSN is working on making a custom cockpit for it though, so they may fix the AB effects then too. To get a different effect it's a simple LUA edit. Just open the VSN_YF12.LUA file in Notepad++ and find the engine/afterburner effect section. Then look around at other aircraft to find a different afterburner effect, and paste the effect name into the YF12 LUA. The modder bought the model for about 40 USD and converted it into the edm format. As a rule, the models are not animated at such a price, so that the modder also realizes this. The modder pays the price and then makes the mod available for free in a game based on the seller's license terms. if you don't like the model, you are free to purchase a model of the appropriate quality for $500 or more and give it to a modder. in this specific case, standard ED textures are used for the afterburner. The F-16C and F-18C use the same textures. the entries in the lua are set for the diameter, the length and the angle to the left, right and up. the SR-71 is twice as long as an F-18C and the engines are twice as large in diameter, which arguably affects the textures. I have now assigned the afterburner texture from the F-18C and the second from the M-2000C to a higher resolution and changed their alpha channel. Look at it. maybe it got better. the textures from this zip must be inserted into the VSN_YF12A.zip and overwritten. the last version has a cockpit. That is not my attitude or belief at all, and I am sorry you see it that way. I am very grateful for the SR-71 mod. I guess I was just trying to say that it is so good, so close to being perfect, that it could be there if it just got a little more attention. For a free mod it is very high quality and I fly it alot. Regarding the cockpit update, I did see on another forum that the creator was working on a new cockpit, however I have not seen that it has been posted anywhere since his update in 2021. Thank you,
Delta59R Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 I was noticing with this mod that the AB flames are reversed when using left and right throttles. Is there an easy way to fix this? or does it require coding knowledge and or an editing program?
