HI,

I'm currently using an i5-11600K and since the MT patch I'm actually getting pretty good performance paired with a G2 and an AMD 6900XT.

However, I'm curious does anyone have an opinion, do you think an i5-13600K will give another significant boost in performance with MT, given that it has more cores (14 vs 6)? I'm curious whether the upgrade would increase my fps overhead or allow me to tweak a bit more eye candy out of my 6900XT, given that the DCS fps overlay does say that I'm currently CPU bound? I'm aware it would also need a new motherboard because of the different socket.

I fly only in VR btw.

Cheers.

I'm not sure if the DCS FPS overlay is working correctly.  According to Open XR Toolkit I am GPU limited in Caucuses F-14 Free Flight.  2-3ms CPU Frametime but 10-13ms GPU. PD1.0 and rather modest graphic settings.  Others in the DCS VR forum are saying they are GPU limited with 4090s also.

I haven't checked the OpenXR toolkit overlay. I should do. But you look like you're running a stronger CPU than me, so maybe you are GPU limited? That's why I'm thinking a CPU upgrade might shift the balance to GPU limited, so at least then I know I'm squeezing the most out of my card. The never ending seesaw...

Did you buy 13600K? I am also considering it, and I bought 4090.

I think the upgrade is surely worth it, if having the best GPU out there.

Hi,

No, I'm still using the 11600K and plan to upgrade the GPU first instead. But I'm still running my 6900XT at the moment as it's still performing pretty well.

It's an upgrade, but the performance lift will be small considering the investment.

Try overclocking that 11600K to 4.9Ghz (all core OC), for which 1.325v Vcore should be enough.
OC'ing over 4.9Ghz will require too much voltage to make it stable, so I wouldn't recommend going over that.
Plenty of guides in the internet on how to overclock the 11th gen CPUs.

Recently I have upgraded GPU to MSI 4090, but I'm still with 3 years old CPU i7 10700K. And as far as I have flown (and driven sim racing), it is still good enough for DCS, with no VR and with VR (Quest Pro). With i5 13600K I would maybe get 15-20% gain, which is almost negligible. Maybe with 13700K and 13900K I would get up to 30% gain, but based on the investement, NO thank you.

I would say its worth waiting for the 14th gen of Intel CPUs.

PS: I also overclocked 10700K to 4.9GHz few days ago, and there is 5% gain over default settings.

Same here, OC'ed 10700K (10th gen Comet Lake) still doing great.
I'll wait for something (yet to be released) that is trully worth the hefty investment on CPU + Cooler + Motherboard + DDR5 RAM (64GB or 128GB kit).

Not even that, as upcoming 14th gen CPUs are just a refresh of current 13th gen Raptor Lake, and Meteor Lake was cancelled for desktop.
The 14th gen later this year will have similar IPC (rumoured only 5% IPC gain, at most) and just more "E" cores (which are weaker and not meant for gaming) than current ones.

What is definitely worth waiting for is the 15th gen Arrow Lake ("next-gen", multi-tile processor)....
Rumoured a 20% increase in IPC over the cancelled Meteor Lake, and a 45% increase in IPC over 12th gen Alder Lake. 😉
Which then means a massive ~70% increase in IPC over 10th gen Comet Lake. 😮 (now that's an upgrade!)

But then, that's a (late?) 2024 release, which also means the following AMD Ryzen (and following X3D?) may also be out too, to compete.

I would dare to say, upgrade even from gen10 (I have 10700K) is not worth it. Specially considering the amount of money spent on new hardware. Maybe really in a year with 15th generation.
