Skyron Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 (edited) Hallo Ladies & Gents I wanted to ask about something here, since a long time ago, but i lately started to play again with a friend of mine ,in the back seat i am used to most kind of procedures back there, and i think i know 95% on how to get things done while RIO-ing BUT - I am facing a problem, that never changed - Since the release of the F14, and i thought about asking here for some help. So, When in RIO seat then ,and While in TWS Auto mode (-or Manual) - i can see a RADAR bandit (Not from LINK4) in about ~20-30 miles away. After Hooking him (FROM TID) with Full HCU - i try to STT lock him with (with either PD-STT or P-STT) 90% of the times, the system does not STT him. (i have tried it many many times) BUT - When i try to lock him from DDD panel (Changing HCU slave to DDD) i have no problem at all and the lock is fast and usually stable. Can you help me please with about STT from TID screen? Thanks Sky. i dont know if this is a BUG topic, so thats why i posted it here. Edited March 23, 2023 by Skyron
Karon Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 It's expected and very unreliable. I don't recall ever using that function, if it does not work it just messes up your awareness. I always go through the DDD. 1 "Cogito, ergo RIO" Virtual Backseaters Volume I: F-14 Radar Intercept Officer - Fifth Public Draft Virtual Backseaters Volume II: F-4E Weapon Systems Officer - Internal Draft WIP Phantom Articles: Air-to-Air and APQ-120 | F-4E Must-know manoevure: SYNC-Z-TURN
Skyron Posted March 23, 2023 Author Posted March 23, 2023 Is this normal? or is this some kind of bug?

Normal, when you're hooking a TWS track and pressing STT you're basically asking the computer to do the job for you. All real RIO SMEs we've talked to always did it manually via the DDD as it was a much safer bet. 1 1
RustBelt Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 Yes TIS gives you the picture, but DDD is primary for running the radar. Otherwise it wouldn’t need a RIO. Computers just weren’t there yet for fancy Hornet/Viper style set it and forget it TWS to STT by the pilot. Think of the TID as the bridge between the Pilot and RIO cockpit. RIO uses DDD to build the TID picture the pilot and RIO use to plan the attack. Then the RIO goes back to DDD to act on the team’s plan while the pilot flies it. 1 1
Skyron Posted March 23, 2023 Author Posted March 23, 2023 Hey thanks, I was just wondering if this is normal or not and looks like it is. i feel comfortable switching from TID too DDD and back while searching for something, so its not a problem. Cheers!
