I just tried Doppler's formation flying trainer... Oh well. I'm still fairly new do dcs. I've been mostly flying the Mirage (went through the stock campaign) and while I still enjoy it a lot I wanted to learn something more competent in a/g role. Now I feel the Mirage was a sort of cheat code.  I scored over 80% of the time within parameters on first trial (still insufficient, I know) but with the Viper I was hopelessly bobbing all over the place chasing the lead then barely avoiding crashing into her.

Looks like this plane is actually harder than what I was told, or I'm just spoiled.

In the real world pilots do not start flight training in a high performance jet. To compensate for this I would recommend you start by adding curves to your controls, a lot of curve, until you can control the plane. As you progress with the plane you will find you can start backing off these curve settings. You always need to set a higher curve on pitch then roll. It takes time a practice but if you stick with it you will get better.

Yup, I tried that. It helped a lot back when I started flying the L-39. In the Viper, I wasn't sure of the result, I feel I got into even more Pio, especially in pitch. Strangely, the Harrier, by all accounts more difficult than the Viper, seems more manageable to me, it takes a lot of attention to fly it but I can hold it steady.  Also, the Viper does accelerate but doesn't like to slow down. In the Mirage, I can pop the airbrakes, maybe execute a barrel roll and I can rapidly kill 100 kts of closure rate, allowing for pretty aggressive rejoins, with acceleration carets and spot-on fpm on the hud this is doable, in the Viper I just zoom past the lead.

I think that curves are more trouble than they’re worth. When you get to the point in the stick travel that the curve starts and you all of a sudden get a load of stick movement. It really messes with you.
